'''Christopher Hewetson Barnes''' (7 February 1833 – 28 September 1884) was an [[English people|English]] first-class [[cricket]]er and [[British Army]] officer.

The son of the surgeon Christopher Hewetson Barnes, he was born at [[Marylebone]] in February 1833. A career soldier, he was an officer in the [[Royal Artillery]] and served in [[British India]] with the [[Bengal Army#Bengal Horse Artillery|Bengal Artillery]]. Barnes was seriously wounded by a bullet to his right breast on 10 November 1857, during the rebel siege of [[Neemuch]] Fort in [[Rajputana]], which was a part of the [[Indian Rebellion of 1857|Indian Mutiny]].<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=22136|date=6 May 1858|page=2225}}</ref> He recovered from his wounds and returned to England, where he played [[first-class cricket]] for the [[Marylebone Cricket Club]] on four occasions in 1860, against [[Oxford University Cricket Club|Oxford University]] and [[Cambridge University Cricket Club|Cambridge University]], in addition to [[county cricket|county opponents]] in the form of [[Kent County Cricket Club|Kent]] and [[Sussex County Cricket Club|Sussex]].<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Players/36/36294/First-Class_Matches.html|title=First-Class Matches played by Christopher Barnes|publisher=CricketArchive|access-date=2021-04-18|url-access=subscription}}</ref> He had little success in these four matches, scoring just 17 runs.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/36/36294/f_Batting_by_Team.html|title=First-Class Batting and Fielding For Each Team by Christopher Barnes|publisher=CricketArchive|access-date=2021-04-18|url-access=subscription}}</ref>

Continuing to serve in the Bengal Artillery, he was promoted to [[Captain (British Army and Royal Marines)|second captain]] in October 1861.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=22621|date=29 April 1862|page=2232}}</ref> He was made a captain in February 1870,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=23600|date=22 March 1870|page=1834}}</ref> with promotion to [[Major (United Kingdom)|major]] following in July 1872.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=23876|date=16 July 1872|page=3193}}</ref> Holding the rank of [[Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom)|lieutenant colonel]] by 1882, he was promoted to [[Colonel (United Kingdom)|colonel]] in December 1882.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=25191|date=23 January 1883|page=399}}</ref> Barnes was appointed to the staff to command the Royal Artillery in [[Khedivate of Egypt|Egypt]] in July 1884.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=25387|date=15 August 1884|page=3679}}</ref> His command in Egypt was however short-lived, with Barnes falling ill from [[dysentery]].
