The &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Chanderi Inscription of {{ayin}}Alā{{hamza}} al-Dīn Khaljī&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is an [[epigraphy|epigraphic record]] in four lines, written in [[Naskh (script)|Naskh script]] in the [[Persian language]]. It records the completion of a [[mosque]] during the governorship of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[amir al-umara|Amīr al-Umarā&amp;#039;]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, Ikhtiyār al-Dawla wa al-Dīn Tamur Sulṭānī by Ismā‘īl, son of ‘Abd al-Salām, entitled Wajīh-i Najīb, the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;muḥarrir&amp;#039;&amp;#039; of the district (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;khiṭṭa&amp;#039;&amp;#039;) of Kol ([[Aligarh]]) during the reign of ‘Alā&amp;#039; al-Dunyā wa al-Dīn Abu al-Muẓaffar Muḥammad Shāh (i.e. ‘Alā&amp;#039; al-Dīn Khaljī, popularly known as [[Alauddin Khalji]], d. 1316 AD).&lt;br /&gt;

The inscription is dated 711 in the Hijra era, sha‘bān 20. It is accordingly said to be the oldest known Islamic inscription from [[Chanderi]]. The inscription was first mentioned in 1924-25 by M. B. Garde in the annual reports of the Gwalior State archaeological department.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;GAR (VS 1981/AD 1924-25): number 10.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; Later it was published in &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Indian Historical Quarterly&amp;#039;&amp;#039;,&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;IHQ 1 (1925): 655-56.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; and listed in the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Annual Report on Indian Epigraphy&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;ARE (1962-63) D: number 59.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; An edition appeared in the 1968 volume of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Epigraphia Indica]], Persian and Arabic Supplement&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;EIAP (1968): 4-10.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; The inscription was later listed in a volume by M. Willis.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Willis, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Inscriptions of Gopakṣetra&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (London, 1996).&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The inscription, lost for a number of years, was located by Muzaffar Ansari who donated it to the Archaeological Museum, Chanderi, where it is registered under the number AMC 97/98. The museum is under the supervision of the [[Archaeological Survey of India]].&lt;br /&gt;
