Bilateral relations between the countries were established on 10 May 1984.<ref name="bi"/><ref name="ib">{{cite web|url=http://www.mea.gov.in/Portal/ForeignRelation/Brunei-India_bil_Brief__XP__2013-3.pdf|title=India-Brunei Relations|publisher=Ministry of External Affairs (India)|date=January 2013|access-date=17 February 2014}}</ref> His Majesty Sultan [[Hassanal Bolkiah]] made a state visit to India in September 1992.<ref name="bi"/><ref name="ib"/> Since the discovery of oil in Brunei in 1929, a number of [[Indians in Brunei|Indians migrated]] to Brunei to work in the oil and allied services sectors; later, many arrived as teachers, with some of them [[transnational marriage|inter-marrying]] with local Bruneian peoples. According to local government's official sources, there are around 10,000 Indians living in Brunei, as of 2013.<ref name="ib"/>

== Economic relations ==
