From 1968 to 1969, Sikder served as the president of greater Jessore district unit of [[Bangladesh Chhatra League]]. In 1985, he was elected chairman of [[Shalikha Upazila]]. He was elected to the parliament four times. He was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Education. He was the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Textile and Jute Ministry.<ref name=":0" />
