Azad was a part of the famous Young Turks of Bihar Congress during the independence movement along with [[Bindeshwari Dubey]], [[Abdul Gafoor]], [[Chandrashekhar Singh]], [[Satyendra Narayan Sinha]], [[Kedar Pandey]] all future chief ministers and [[Sitaram Kesri]], future national president of Indian National Congress.{{citation needed|date=February 2021}}

==Political career==

He was six time member of the [[Lok Sabha]] from [[Bhagalpur]],[[Bihar]]. He was a veteran Congressman, and [[Chief Minister]] of Bihar between 14 February 1988 and 10 March 1989.<ref name="Bhagwat Jha reference1" />
