The bypoll to the Bhowanipore seat was necessitated after sitting MLA of [[Trinamool Congress]] [[Subrata Bakshi]] resigned to make way for the Chief Minister [[Mamata Banerjee]] to contest. She had not contested the state assembly elections earlier.
