Basu began her career as a novelist with the publication of ''Janmabhoomi Mātribhoomi''. She is a renowned novelist, short story writer, and essayist, writing for children and teenagers as well. She was awarded the Tarashankar Award for ''Antarghāt'' (Treason), and [[Ananda Purashkar]] for ''Maitreya Jātak''. She is also a recipient of the Sushila Devi Birla Award and Sahitya Setu Puraskar.
