J.N Bhattacharya described the Bagdis as an aboriginal tribe, who were fishermen, woodcutters, and litter carriers. The bagdis were also known as the ''criminal tribe'' of Bengal under [[Criminal Tribes Act]] of the British.<ref name=":0" /><br />
