Azam Khan has been an [[Member of the Legislative Assembly (India)|MLA]] for nine terms; all from [[Rampur (Assembly constituency)|Rampur assembly constituency]]. He was also a cabinet minister in the [[government of Uttar Pradesh]]. Khan is currently a member of the [[Samajwadi Party]] but has been a member of four other political parties between 1980 and 1992. During his first term ([[8th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh]]), he was a member of [[Janata Party (Secular)]]. == Murder of Kamlesh Tiwari ==
In 2015, in response to Union [[Ministry of Finance (India)|finance minister]] [[Arun Jaitley]]'s statements in support of [[decriminalisation of homosexuality]] in India, Azam Khan reportedly made [[Homophobia|homophobic]] remarks, calling [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh|RSS]] leaders homosexuals.<ref>{{Cite news|date=2 December 2015|first1=Mrigank |last1=Tiwari|title=RSS volunteers are 'homosexuals', says Azam|url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bareilly/RSS-volunteers-are-homosexuals-says-Azam/articleshow/50002552.cms|access-date=27 July 2020|work=The Times of India|language=en}}</ref> A day later, [[Kamlesh Tiwari]], later the founder of Hindu Samaj Party, issued a press statement slamming Azam for his comment against the RSS. Tiwari later died after being stabbed and having his throat slit by two assailants in [[Lucknow]].
