The West Bengal political scenario has changed dramatically over the years. In the early years after independence it was a scene of fluctuating fortunes between the Congress and the Left wing parties, till the latter captured power in the late seventies. The [[United News of India]] in a candid analysis says, “The green surge swept Bengal to demolish the red bastion in 2011 Assembly elections… Moreover, as the Left still remained cornered in state politics, their neutralised voters are increasingly migrating to the BJP for a viable alternative.”<ref>{{cite web| url = http://www.uniindia.com/eng/electiondisplay.php?sid=803&ngsystemtask=3325weare24olym54hrt56u6755uwere21archives| title = Close fight in Asansol| publisher = UNI, 28 April 2014| access-date = 13 June 2014| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140714124038/http://www.uniindia.com/eng/electiondisplay.php?sid=803&ngsystemtask=3325weare24olym54hrt56u6755uwere21archives| archive-date = 14 July 2014| url-status = dead}}</ref>
