== Early life and Education ==
Dr. Ashok Kukade was born in well educated family. His father Laxmanrao Kukade was a famous physician in [[Pune]], [[Maharashtra]]. His family shifted to Narayan Peth, Pune in 1952. He was one of the brightest students of his class. After his primary studies, he was admitted to [[Fergusson University|Fergusson college]], Pune. He was a gold medallist and University topper in [[Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery|M.B.B.S.]] course. After that he completed his [[Master of Science|M.S.]] in [[Surgery]]. Due to his childhood association with [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh]], he was inclined towards social work and patriotism. == Settling in Latur ==
He was inclined towards social work from his childhood. As a result, after completion of education, he decided to apply his knowledge to the benefit of the society, especially where there are very less medical facilities available. He came to [[Latur]] in 1966 with his wife Jyotsna Kukade (Also a doctor and social worker) and established [[Vivekanand Hospital and Research Center|Vivekanand Hospital]] on 4 January 1966, the birth anniversary of [[Swami Vivekananda]]. Dr. Bharadia and Dr. Alurkar were associates and co-founders of hospital. At that time, Latur was lacking even basic medical facilities.

== Vivekanand Hospital ==
During early years in 1966, hospital was established in a single room. Due to the dedication in work, hospital saw very good response in early years. As a result a new building was constructed and inaugurated on 15 August 1969.

== Emergency Years ==
Dr. Kukade was arrested along with several other [[Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh|RSS]] leaders during the [[The Emergency (India)|Internal Emergency]] imposed by Prime Minister [[Indira Gandhi]] in 1975.<ref>{{Cite book|last=Kapoor|first=Coomi|url=https://books.google.co.in/books?id=ABbLCQAAQBAJ&redir_esc=y|title=The Emergency: A Personal History|publisher=Penguin UK|isbn=9789352141197}}</ref> He was shifted to [[Nashik]] Jail on 6 July 1975.
