Tripathi was arrested and sent to jail on 25 November 2016 for his wife's murder case, Tripathi was denied a ticket by the Samajwadi Party after his name cropped up in his wife's murder case.
He was granted bail in March 2017 after winning Assembly election as an independent candidate.
