Alice Pickering was born in [[Leek, Staffordshire]], in 1823.&amp;lt;ref name=familytree&amp;gt;{{cite web|url=http://www.allen-family-tree.co.uk/solomon-tredwell.html|title=Solomon Tredwell|publisher=Instone Family Tree|accessdate=31 January 2018}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; She married Solomon Tredwell, a railway contractor, in [[Leeds]] in 1846.&amp;lt;ref name=grace/&amp;gt; Awarded the construction of the Bhor Ghat section of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway, Alice and Solomon arrived in India in 1859. Alice Tredwell took up the contract with a remarkable &amp;quot;degree of spirit and judgment&amp;quot;,&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;Wilson2016&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; assigning the Railway&amp;#039;s engineers Swainston Adamson and George Louis Clowser to manage the construction. Alice Tredwell returned to England in 1860.
