He later earned a [[Master of Science]] degree from [[Punjabi University]], Patiala, and obtained a [[Doctor of Philosophy|Ph.D.]] in chemistry from the [[IIT Delhi|Indian Institute of Technology]] (IIT), Delhi, in 1977.
