Mamun was born on 13 July 1942 in [[Jamalpur District]]. He completed his bachelor&amp;#039;s and master&amp;#039;s degrees in history from the [[University of Dhaka]].&amp;lt;ref name=pass/&amp;gt; He wrote in his memoirs &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Aamar Kotha&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, which was serially published in the fortnightly &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Tarokalok&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;quot;When I first got admitted in the Dhaka University, I turned to Najmul Huda Bacchu vai to get a chance in theatre. He took me to [[Natyaguru]] [[Nurul Momen]]. Hearing that besides acting, I write plays also, Momen Sir asked me, &amp;#039;Have you read Bernard Shaw?&amp;#039; He cast me in his next play. That was my beginning. Since then I never had to look back&amp;quot;. In 1950, he wrote his first stage play, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Niyotir Parihas&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. Since 1965, Mamun was associated with [[Pakistan Television F.C.|Pakistan Television (PTV)]], later renamed [[Bangladesh Television]] (BTV). He wrote 25 dramas, seven novels, an autobiography titled &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Amar Ami&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, and a travelogue titled &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Manhattan&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. His literature mostly depicts the middle-class lifestyle of Bangladesh.
