Jalil was born on 21 January 1939 in Naogaon, [[East Bengal]], [[British India]]. His family was involved in the jute trade. In 1960, he received admission at the [[University of Dhaka]] and graduated with a B.A. in political science. From 2002 to 2009, Jalil served as the General Secretary of Awami League.<ref name=":1">{{Cite web|date=2013-03-06|title=Abdul Jalil dies|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news/jalil-in-coma|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> In 2006, he meet with [[Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan]], Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, to over come the political impasse over the next national election.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2011-09-12|title=Jalil, Bhuiyan played game|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-202147|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref>

On 28 May 2007, Jalil was arrested from headquarters of Mercantile Bank during the [[2006-2008 Bangladeshi political crisis|2006-2008 Bangladeshi political crises]].<ref name=":2">{{Cite web|date=2008-04-05|title=Jalil’s condition deteriorates further|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-30836|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> His health deteriorated in custody and the Awami League called for his release on health grounds.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2008-02-29|title=Jalil improves slightly|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-25458|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> On 4 June 2007, he was admitted to [[Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University]]. He had been suffering from heart and kidney disease.<ref name=":2" />

On 1 September 2008, Jalil returned to Bangladesh from Singapore following his treatment.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2008-09-01|title=Jalil returns home|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-52843|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> During his detention he was unable to work as the General Secretary of Awami League and Joint General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam became the acting General Secretary. On 30 January 2009, Jalil stated in the Jatiya Sangshad that he was tortured by Intelligence agents during the Bangladesh political crises under the Caretaker Government rule. He said that he was tortured for five days straight and that agents of [[Directorate General of Forces Intelligence]] recorded his forced confessions. They release those recording to create a distance between him and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.<ref name=":6">{{Cite web|date=2009-01-30|title=Jalil tells of torture|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-73604|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> He called for an investigation of the torture allegations and called for a law that limits the jurisdiction of intelligence agencies to military matters only.<ref name=":6" /> In April 2009, he was elected chairman of [[Mercantile Bank (Bangladesh)|Mercantile Bank Limited]].<ref>{{Cite web|date=2009-04-05|title=Jalil named Mercantile Bank chairman|url=https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-82759|access-date=2020-07-23|website=The Daily Star|language=en}}</ref> On 17 April 2009, he bail in the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission case was extended by [[Bangladesh High Court]].<ref name=":4" />

[[The Daily Star (Bangladesh)|The Daily Star]] described his permanent replacement in 2009 as "unceremonious".<ref name=":5" /> He was not allowed to carry out his duties as General Secretary and Syed Ashraful Islam had all but replaced him. In September 2009, while in London, he criticised [[Bangladesh Awami League|Awami League]] chief [[Sheikh Hasina]].<ref name=":0">{{cite news|title=Abdul Jalil is dead|url=http://bdnews24.com/bangladesh/2013/03/06/abdul-jalil-is-dead|newspaper=bdnews24.com|date=6 March 2013|accessdate=15 April 2013}}</ref> In London, during an interview with [[Bangla TV]], he said the Awami League government had come to power through "an understanding". He was criticised by Awami League for his remarks but was welcomed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party. == Death and legacy ==
Jalil went to Singapore on 25 February 2013 for treatment.
