Reddy was born near Nellore in a small beach town Mypadu in a agricultural family. Reddy married to Bharathi. Their elder son Sunil is a business man. Reddy made around 94 movies and almost 90% of them were successful. He was also one of the foremost director who introduced Ilaiyaraja to give music for big budget movies in Telugu film industry. His movies Abilasha, Rakshashudu, Challenge were big musical hits of Ilaiyaraja.
