Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad

Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad[1] is a prominent strategic studies think tank located in Islamabad, Pakistan. Established in 1973, the institute is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and aims to provide an in-depth understanding and objective analysis of regional and global strategic issues that impact international peace and security. Initially, it was named the "Pakistan Institute of Strategic Studies" (P.I.S.S).

The ISSI serves as a platform for discussion, inviting visiting dignitaries from various countries to address current global issues. For instance, in November 2017, Japanese Ambassador Takashi Kurai delivered a public talk titled "Japan-Pakistan Relationship: 65 Years and Beyond," where he highlighted historical trade relations between the two nations and the significance of President Ayub Khan's visit to Japan.

Notable figures associated with the institute include Shireen Mazari, a well-known nationalist commentator, and Tanvir Ahmad Khan, who served as Director General and Chairman after his tenure as Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. In 2018, Masood Khan, Pakistan's former Ambassador to the United Nations, held the position of Director General of the institute. Through its research and discussions, the ISSI contributes to the discourse on strategic matters, fostering greater understanding of the complexities surrounding international relations and security.
