Katiyar was commissioned into the 23th battalion, The [[Rajput Regiment]] in June 1986 from the [[Indian Military Academy]], [[Dehradun]].

Surya Sreenivas was born in [[Pamarru]], [[East Godavari district]]. He completed his schooling in [[Chittoor]] and later moved to [[Vijayawada]]. He pursued a [[B.Sc. degree]] from P.B.
