This commission is an attached office of the [[Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions#Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT)|Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)]] which consists of chairman, two members and a secretary-cum-controller of examinations. His post is equivalent to the level of additional secretary to the government of India.

== History ==

The estimates committee in the [[Parliament of India|parliament]] recommended the setting up of a Service Selection Commission<ref>{{cite web |title=Setup of The Commission |url=https://ssc.gov.in/about-us/commission |website=ssc.gov.in |publisher=Staff Selection Commission |access-date=4 March 2024}}</ref> in its 47th report (1967–68) for conducting examinations to recruit lower categories of posts. Later, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, on 4 November 1975 [[government of India]] constituted a commission called Subordinate Service Commission. On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as Staff Selection Commission. The functions of Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the government of India through [[Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions|Ministry of Personnel]], [[Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System|Public Grievances]] and on 21 May 1999. Then the new constitution and functions of Staff Selection Commission came into effect from 1 June 1999. Every year conducts the [[SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination|Combined Graduate Level Examination]] for recruiting non-[[Gazetted Officer (India)|gazetted officers]] to various [[government jobs]].

The estimates committee in the [[Parliament of India|parliament]] recommended the setting up of a Service Selection Commission<ref>{{cite web |title=Setup of The Commission |url=https://ssc.gov.in/about-us/commission |website=ssc.gov.in |publisher=Staff Selection Commission |access-date=4 March 2024}}</ref> in its 47th report (1967–68) for conducting examinations to recruit lower categories of posts. Later, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, on 4 November 1975 [[government of India]] constituted a commission called Subordinate Service Commission. On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as Staff Selection Commission. The functions of Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the government of India through [[Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions|Ministry of Personnel]], [[Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System|Public Grievances]] and on 21 May 1999. On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as Staff Selection Commission. ==History==
Merit based civil services exam system started in India since 1854. Before 1854 Directors of East India company use to recruit or nominate civil servannts and train them at Haileybury college in London.
In early days of civil services exam pappern was focused to help Britishers for this post and exam use to be conducted only at London.
It was first in 1922 that [[Civil Services Examination (India)|civil services exam]] started in India as well.
First Indian to clear civil servant exam was Satender Nath Tagore in 1864 and till 1922 only 4 other Indians could clear civil services.
In 1935 civil service commission was brough to "government of India act" It came in affect since 1 April 1937. It was called as Federal public service commission.

==Post Independence==
India became Indipendent on [[Independence Day (India)|15th August 1947]] and after inaugration of constitution of India on 26 January 1950, Federal Services commission of India was called Union Public services commission under clause (1) of article 378 of Indian constitution.

Every year about 1 Million students fill up form to apply for most prestigious and difficult exam in India called civil services conducted by UPSC.

Merit based civil services exam system started in India since 1854. Before 1854 Directors of East India company use to recruit or nominate civil servannts and train them at Haileybury college in London.
In early days of civil services exam pappern was focused to help Britishers for this post and exam use to be conducted only at London.
It was first in 1922 that [[Civil Services Examination (India)|civil services exam]] started in India as well.
First Indian to clear civil servant exam was Satender Nath Tagore in 1864 and till 1922 only 4 other Indians could clear civil services.
In 1935 civil service commission was brough to "government of India act" It came in affect since 1 April 1937. It was called as Federal public service commission.

==Post Independence==
India became Indipendent on [[Independence Day (India)|15th August 1947]] and after inaugration of constitution of India on 26 January 1950, Federal Services commission of India was called Union Public services commission under clause (1) of article 378 of Indian constitution.

Every year about 1 Million students fill up form to apply for most prestigious and difficult exam in India called civil services conducted by UPSC.
