Usually, {{transliteration|ar|ṣallā}} or "blessings" is used exclusively for Muhammad to distinguish between him and other prophets (and Imams in Shia Islam), but theoretically, it is used for all prophets equally.

The honorifics for Muhammad are enjoined by Surat [[al-Ahzab]]:

[[Al-Tirmidhi]] recorded that [[Abu Hurairah]] said, "The Messenger of Allah said, 'May he be humiliated, the man in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send Salaam upon me; may he be humiliated, the man who sees the [[Ramadan (calendar month)|month of Ramadan]] come and go, and he is not forgiven; may he be humiliated, the man whose parents live to old age and they do not cause him to be granted admittance to Paradise.'" Al-Tirmidhi said that this hadith was {{transliteration|ar|[[hasan (hadith)|ḥasan gharib]]}}, "good but only reported once".

In {{transliteration|ar|[[Sahih Muslim]]}}, {{transliteration|ar|[[Sunan Abu Dawood]]}}, {{transliteration|ar|[[Jami' at-Tirmidhi]]}} and {{transliteration|ar|[[al-Sunan al-Sughra]]}}, four of the [[Kutub al-Sittah|six major hadith collections]] recorded that Abu Hurairah said, "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever sends one Salaam upon me, Allah will send ten upon him.'"

[[Ahmad ibn Hanbal]] reported in his {{transliteration|ar|Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal}} that the Companion of Muhammad, Abu Talha ibn Thabit, said:

[[Al-Bayhaqi]] reports that Abu Hurairah said that Muhammad said, "Send the Salaam on Allah's messengers and prophets for Allah sent them as He sent me."

This point is further founded in the saying by Muhammad, "The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned, then he does not send the Salam upon me." This was recorded in {{transliteration|ar|[[Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal]]}}.

===Salafi ruling on abbreviating prayers upon Muhammad===
Scholars of the [[Salafi]] branch of Islam practised in [[Saudi Arabia]] have instructed their followers not to abbreviate the {{transliteration|ar|[[salawat]]}} upon Muhammad. For example, [[Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz]], the [[Grand Mufti]] of Saudi Arabia, said:

{{blockquote|1=As it is prescribed to send prayers upon the Prophet (peace and prayers of Allah be upon him) in prayer when saying the {{transliteration|ar|[[tashahhud]]}}, and it is prescribed when giving {{transliteration|ar|[[khutbah]]s}}, saying {{transliteration|ar|[[Du'a]]}} and praying for forgiveness, and after the {{transliteration|ar|[[Adhan]]}}, and when entering and exiting the mosque, and when mentioning him in other circumstances, so it is more important to do so when writing his name in a book, letter, article and so on. So it is prescribed to write the prayers in full so as to fulfil the command that Allah has given to Muslims, and so that the reader will remember to say the prayers when he reads it. So one should not write the prayers on the Prophet (peace and prayers of Allah be upon him) in short form such as writing (S) or (SAWS) etc, or other forms that some writers use, because that is going against the command of Allah in His Book, where He says (interpretation of the meaning):

And that (writing it in abbreviated form) does not serve that purpose and is devoid of the virtue of writing "{{transliteration|ar|salla Allaahu 'alayhi wa salaam}} (May Allah send prayers and peace upon him)" in full. Moreover the reader may not take notice of it and may not understand what is meant by it. It should also be noted that the symbol used for it is regarded as disapproved by the scholars, who warned against it.{{citation needed|date=January 2015}}{{year needed|date=January 2015}}}}

Some honorifics apply to the archangels ([[Gabriel#Islam|Jibril]], [[Michael (archangel)#Quran|Mikhail]], etc.) as well as any other Islamic prophets preceding Muhammad ([[Jesus in Islam|Isa]] as, [[Moses in Islam|Musa]] as, [[Abraham in Islam|Ibrahim]] as etc.). The '''GIP-1 to 8''' were 8 locomotives produced by Vulcan Foundry in 1851, to operate on the [[Great Indian Peninsula Railway]]'s line from Bombay to Tannah (now [[Thane]]). Three of these would reportedly pull India'a first Train from [[Bori Bunder railway station|Bori Bunder]] to [[Thane railway station|Tannah]] on 16 April 1853.

The [[2-4-0]] type tender locomotives were ordered by the GIPR to operate on the first railway line in India. The Vulcan Foundry rotation numbers of these were from 324-331, while the working numbers were 680-687.<ref>https://enuii.org/vulcan_foundry/locomotive_list.htm</ref> Thses locomotives had a water capacity of 800 gallons (3028.33 Litres), and a tender capacity of 600 gallons (2271.25 Litres). They had 5 feet diameter driving wheels, a firegate area of 13.5 sq.ft (1.253 sq.m) and a heating surface of 777.25 sq.ft (72.2088 sq.m).

Three locomotives arrived at Bombay on the ship Charles in September 1852, along with carriages and six European drivers accompanying them. Since the locomotives were still in the process of being made ready in November that year, the trial journey conducted on 18 November 1852, was pulled by the [[E. B. Wilson and Company|E.B.Wilson]] manufactured [[Lord Falkland (locomotive)|Lord Falkland]] shunting Locomotive.<ref>https://swr.indianrailways.gov.in/uploads/files/1597914101378-The%20first%20%20running%20of%20%20railway%20locomotive%20%20in%20India.pdf</ref> They were expected to be made ready by February 1853.

Three of this series of locomotives were used to haul the first passenger train in India. They were ceremoniously named Sindh, Sultan and Sahib. They together pulled the 14 carriage train from [[Bori Bunder railway station|Bori Bunder]] to [[Thane railway station|Tannah]] (now Thane) on 16 April 1853.

The history of Sahib and Sultan is lost, however it is suggested, that they were later scrapped. Sindh however, reportedly survived, and was seen to be plinthed near the Chief Mechanical Engineer office at Byculla. This locomotive was sent to Delhi during the Railway Centenary celebrations at Delhi, to be kept as display.
