Government Medical College, Kannur or Paraiyaram Medical College was established in March 1993 at Pariyaram in Kannur district, Kerala state, South India. It was the first medical college to be established under the co operative sector in India.

The nucleus for this building complex was the Pariyaram Sanitorium which was inaugurated way back in 1938 or so. The engineer who built the building was Mr. Appadu Vetil Narayana Menon.

The Kerala State Co-operative Hospital Complex (KCHC) and Centre for Advanced Medical Services Ltd. is a Co-operative Society registered under Kerala Co-operative Societies Act 1969 with an object to build a 1000-bed super-speciality Hospital with modern medical facilities and a medical college. The Management of Kerala State Co-operative Hospital Complex and Centre for Advanced Medical Services Ltd. formed a Charitable Trust Named Academy of Medical Science (ACME) under the direct control of KCHC. The above society was registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 in November 1993 with the primary objective of running a medical college.

The founder of Pariyaram Medical College was veteran political leader Shri M V Raghavan. The founder Chairman of ACME was Shri K Karunakaran, former Chief Minister of the State. Dr P G R Pillai who is the founder Director and Principal requires special mention towards his contributions to start the institute.

The institution is situated in an area of 119 acre in a hilly rural area (Pariyaram), 9 km north of Taliparamba, 31 km away from district headquarters Kannur and 11 km south of Payyanur on the National Highway 17. The population in this area lacks specialised medical care facilities. The nearest Medical College, Mangalore, is 125 km to the north. In the beginning, the hospital and colleges started functioning in the buildings owned by the erstwhile tuberculosis sanatorium at Pariyaram.

First batch started in 1995 with hundred students. On 9 February 1997, the state government took over the control of the management of the institutions. The government has constituted a committee named Board of Control to run KCHC and ACME. The takeover was initially for a period of two years ending on 8 February 1999. The period was extended periodically six months at a time until 2 December 2000. This act was repealed by the ordinance taking over assets and liabilities of both KCHC and ACME. It was during this period the present buildings and structure of the institute were built by sanctioning government fund by the then chief minister Shri E K Nayannar.
