==Plot==
Maayi ([[Sarathkumar]]) is a well-respected, do-gooder in a village. He considers women in the village as his sisters and even helps financially to conduct their weddings. He is a man who is ready to kill his father Irulandi ([[Vijayakumar (Tamil actor)|Vijayakumar]]) when he learns that he had a second wife. But the father opts to kill himself rather than face his son and so, Maayi brings his stepsister Lakshmi ([[Suvalakshmi]]) to live with him. A local MLA (Rajan. P. Dev) comes to Maayi to get his support during the upcoming election, but he refuses and the MLA loses the election. But his son (Anand), who admires Maayi, marries Lakshmi.

Meanwhile, Bhuvaneswari ([[Meena (actress)|Meena]]), Maayi's distant relative's daughter comes to the village from Bangalore and she initially misunderstands Maayi by seeing his looks but later realizes her mistake after knowing about Maayi's hard work and his help towards improving the village. Maayi has built free hospital, day care center, college etc. to help the villagers. Bhuvaneshwari is attracted towards Maayi and proposes him but Maayi does not accept her love. But Bhuvana remains confident about marrying Maayi following which he tells his flashback. Maayi was born into a very poor family where his mother (Sabitha Anand) was infected by leprosy even before Maayi's birth. Due to poor financial condition, his mother could not be treated in hospital and instead was kept alone in a room. She was not allowed to touch her son Maayi fearing chances of the disease being spread. Maayi has never seen his mother right from his childhood as she always stays in a closed room. When Maayi was 8 years old, his mother gets frustrated more as her disease prevents her to show her affection towards Maayi and she commits suicide by drowning in a river. This shocks Maayi and he decides not to marry any woman as he does not want any girl to touch his body which was even untouched by his beloved mother.

Maayi convinces Bhuvaneshwari to marry someone else. Also, Maayi comes to know that his step sister Lakshmi is being tortured by her husband and it was all a plan to take revenge on Maayi for not supporting the local MLA during elections. Maayi beats up Lakshmi's husband and says that he will never support criminal activities even if it impacts his family. On the day of Bhuvaneshwari's wedding, the bride groom's family misunderstands that Maayi and Bhuvaneshwari are lovers seeing Maayi's dhoti in her room and stops the marriage. Bhuvaneshwari's friend discloses the truth that Maayi gave his dhoti to safeguard her when her dresses were washed away in water sometime back. Manorama who also belongs the village shouts at the groom's family for their cruel thoughts and she requests Maayi to marry Bhuvaneshwari as that would be the right thing. Maayi obeys Manorama's words as his mother's and marries Bhuvaneshwari.

== Plot ==
Rishi ([[Sarath Kumar]]) is a tough, suave, professional thief who is the right-hand of Satyan ([[Arun Pandian]]), the underworld kingpin. On one of Rishi's missions, he happens to watch Minister Devaraj ([[Devan (actor)|Devan]]) kill Hema ([[Bhuvaneswari (actress)|Bhuvaneswari]]), a TV reporter who is about to expose him. Before dying, Hema hands a floppy to Rishi. Rishi neither bothers about the floppy nor the murder, but Devaraj wants the floppy back. Things get confusing because of Velu (Sarath Kumar), who looks like Rishi and gets into trouble. Velu is the opposite of Rishi: he is simple-minded, takes life easy, and works for a moneylender. The "seth" lends money for buying cars, and Velu, with his friend Cheenu ([[Ramesh Khanna]]), persuades errant customers to either repay dues or part with their cars.

Complications arise when the paths of the duo cross, for Rishi and Velu are lookalikes. Only Indu ([[Meena (actress)|Meena]]), a salesgirl, seems to have some family to speak of.

The narration moves smoothly forward with Rishi and Velu leading their own lives, then their paths cross. One is mistaken for the other, and complications arise. The underworld guns for Velu. Indu, who becomes Velu's girlfriend, sees Rishi with Nandini and berates Velu for his duplicity.

Meanwhile, Rishi turns over a new leaf when one of his tasks ends up in a singer Nandhini ([[Sanghavi]]) being blinded. He saves her life, finances for her eye operation, and turns her protector, knowing fully well that she could identify him and the rest of the gang. He even parts ways with Satyan on the issue, but the latter is unwilling to let him go.

Velu is puzzled when he is attacked by a gang who demands the floppy from him. When Indu accuses him of having an affair with a girl she sees him in the hospital with, Velu visits the hospital and encounters Rishi. The duo strikes a good rapport. The puzzle pieces fall in place. Devaraj, realizing that his ministerial position is shaky, kidnaps Nandini and blackmails Rishi to kill the Chief Minister ([[S. S. Rajendran]]), but Velu goes in his place. The scene where he tries to warn the security personnel about the assassination attempt, only to find that they too are part of the conspiracy is taken straight from a Hollywood film.

The movie ends rather abruptly, with Velu being shot and the Chief Minister's life being saved.
