Abhijeet Vaidya (Umesh Kamat) and Harshavardhan Ghodke (Akshay Pendse), two close friends and engineering college students, lie to their respective parents and plan to go for a trip to [[Mumbai]] from Harshavardhan's relatives' [[red]]-coloured [[Mahindra Scorpio|Scorpio]] car registered with the number "3417". After they reach their destination the next morning, the duo stops at a petrol pump in [[Chembur]] situated on the Mumbai-Pune Highway. While there, Abhijeet and Harshavardhan get their car tyres filled with air by mechanic Prabhudeva (Samir Choughule), also known as Tambi, and also jokingly converse with dance artist Saraswatibai Jagaonkar ([[Nirmiti Sawant]]), whose dance troupe has stopped at the petrol pump as well for their bus repair work. While Harshavardhan is getting petrol filled in their car by the petrol pump employee Pandurang Kute, Abhijeet decides to go to buy snacks from a store located in the vicinity. The store owner Sawant (Girish Joshi) is woken up from his sleep by Abhijeet, who manages to persuade him to let him buy snacks from the store. While buying snacks, Abhijeet quickly shoplifts a music CD to teach the irritated Sawant a lesson for his rude behaviour. The duo departs the petrol pump.

Soon after, Abhijeet and Harshavardhan are apprehended by the Mumbai police at a nearby checkpoint for unknown reasons. They initially believe that they have been arrested for shoplifting the CD from Sawant's store. After being taken to the police station, the duo is shocked to learn that they have been accused of robbing and stabbing Pandurang Kute fatally with a ''[[gupti]]'' (an Indian weapon which looks like a swordstick) inside the petrol pump premises, a shocking and unexpected incident that happened soon after their departure from the petrol pump. Due to circumstantial evidence and the confession to the shoplifting misconstrued as one to the stabbing, Abhijeet is charged with first-degree murder and Harshavardhan as his accomplice in crime. Being lost in a strange city with no contacts, Abhijeet helplessly contacts his ingenuous mother Shaku ([[Amita Khopkar]]) from the police station in his village to explain their position and asks her to somehow free them from this matter. Shaku informs Abhijeet that her brother and his maternal uncle Advocate Keshav Kunthalgirikar ([[Makarand Anaspure]]) is an inexperienced but dubiously credentialed [[lawyer]] in their family. Keshav, who has been communicated by Shaku, arrives in Mumbai and visits Abhijeet and Harshavardhan in prison, advising them to be truthful to him and the court about their involvement in the murder.

Being totally new to the practice of law, Keshav embarrasses himself before the prosecution counsel Advocate Phadnavis ([[Sachin Khedekar]]) and the judge Prabhune (Mohan Agashe) in the first hearing of the trial. Due to his disrespect and failure to follow court etiquette, Prabhune punishes him for contempt of court and sentences Keshav to imprisonment for two days. In prison, Keshav meets serial gambler Bhai (Sanjay Mone) and his gang who bully and make fun of Keshav. However, Keshav's girlfriend Neha (Sharvari Jamenis) comes to visit him in Mumbai and bails him out. After a lot of deliberation, the couple checks into a hotel room where Neha is shown to be romantic and Keshav shy. In the next hearing, Keshav argues of the only evidence against Abhijeet and Harshavardhan being circumstantial that Phadnavis counters that the available evidence is strong enough to convict them.

Later, it is shown that Harshavardhan's father Suryakant Ghodke ([[Arun Nalawade]]), who is a renowned politician, learns about the arrest of him and Abhijeet and decides to arrange for a more experienced lawyer rather than the raw and inexperienced Keshav. A public defender Advocate G. B. Godbole ([[Pushkar Shrotri]]) is arranged by Harshavardhan's father, but he stutters and stammers constantly and has great difficulty in forming cohesive sentences, leading to a lot of amusement in the court. Harshavardhan's father, however, eventually fires Godbole and decides to retain Keshav, tremendously impressed with the his cross-examination skills. In the following hearing, the prosecution examines Saraswatibai and Tambi as they both were witnesses at the petrol pump where the murder took place. Nevertheless, Keshav's cross-examination with Tambi and Saraswatibai clearly establishes that the possibility of another red-coloured Scorpio car being present at the petrol pump during the time of the murder cannot be ruled out, thus creating reasonable doubt.

Further, the prosecution examines Sawant who is still irritated about the fact that Abhijeet disturbed his sleep and vociferously states that the murderer could have not been anyone else but the accused Abhijeet and Harshavardhan. However, Keshav cross-examines him and exploits gaps in his testimony, establishing that his attention was diverted from the petrol pump around the time of the murder, and thus he could have not stated with absolute certanity that not anyone else rather than Abhijeet and Harshavardhan is the murder. In the next hearing, the prosecution examines the investigating officer Inspector P. J. Ambildhage (Ganesh Yadav) where Keshav even discusses the probability of the police manipulating evidence to trap Abhijeet and Harshavardhan, which further weakens the prosecution case. At the end of the hearing, Phadnavis, seemingly impressed with the novice Keshav's advocacy skills, invites him to his farmhouse for a drink that night. During their meeting, Phadnavis carefully teases Keshav around his law school days, his graduation, and his initial days as a lawyer, which Keshav hesitantly answers. He then gets into a debate with Phadnavis about how law and advocacy is more important than just earning money and manipulating the legal system to win cases. This irks Phadnavis who has a record of not losing a single case and angrily orders Keshav to leave, swearing that he will destroy his case in the next hearing.

In the final hearing, Keshav concludes his arguments and has seemingly succeeded in convincing Prabhune of Abhijeet and Harshavardhan's innocence. However, Phadnavis twists the tale and asks for permission from Prabhune to examine "Keshav" as a witness, much to everyone's puzzlement. Phadnavis asks Keshav under oath about his shaky professional history and eventually, it is revealed that Keshav never passed the bar or obtained a license to practice law. On this ground, Phadnavis applies for a re-trial of the case before Prabhune with a rather qualified lawyer to represent Abhijeet and Harshavardhan. When demanded an explanation, an ashamed Keshav admits his mistake before Prabhune and goes on to make an emotional speech about how the [[law]] was meant to uphold justice and serve the needy and instead, laments that it has become a tool for people like Phadnavis to exploit technical loopholes in the procedure to strongarm cases in their favour, at the expense of the poor and needy who end up with nothing in their hands. As regards the case, Keshav creates more reasonable doubt by explaining that the angle of the injuries found on Pandurang Kute's dead body strongly indicates that the murderer should have been a left-hander and points out that both Abhijeet and Harshavardhan are right-handers.

Acting upon Saraswatibai's information, the Mumbai police investigate that a group of criminals with a red-coloured Scorpio car in [[Pune]] was recently arrested for a bank robbery and that they are presumably the culprits of Pandurang Kute's murder as well. Prabhune, on the basis of reasonable doubt, announces a verdict of not guilty to Abhijeet and Harshavardhan, much to the relief of them and Keshav. However, given that Keshav has committed a crime by practicing law without a license, Prabhune orders a trial against him for cheating and contempt of court under Sections 419 and 420 of the [[Indian Penal Code]]. At the end of the hearing, Phadnavis, seemingly impressed with the novice Keshav's advocacy skills, invites him to his farmhouse for a drink that night. During their meeting, Phadnavis carefully teases Keshav around his law school days, his graduation, and his initial days as a lawyer, which Keshav hesitantly answers. He then gets into a debate with Phadnavis about how law and advocacy is more important than just earning money and manipulating the legal system to win cases. This irks Phadnavis who has a record of not losing a single case and angrily orders Keshav to leave, swearing that he will destroy his case in the next hearing.

In the final hearing, Keshav concludes his arguments and has seemingly succeeded in convincing Prabhune of Abhijeet and Harshavardhan's innocence. When demanded an explanation, an ashamed Keshav admits his mistake before Prabhune and goes on to make an emotional speech about how the [[law]] was meant to uphold justice and serve the needy and instead, laments that it has become a tool for people like Phadnavis to exploit technical loopholes in the procedure to strongarm cases in their favour, at the expense of the poor and needy who end up with nothing in their hands. As regards the case, Keshav creates more reasonable doubt by explaining that the angle of the injuries found on Pandurang Kute's dead body strongly indicates that the murderer should have been a left-hander and points out that both Abhijeet and Harshavardhan are right-handers.

Acting upon Saraswatibai's information, the Mumbai police investigate that a group of criminals with a red-coloured Scorpio car in [[Pune]] was recently arrested for a bank robbery and that it is presumably the culprit of Pandurang Kute's murder as well. Prabhune, on the basis of reasonable doubt, announces a verdict of not guilty to Abhijeet and Harshavardhan, much to the relief of them and Keshav. However, given that Keshav has committed a crime by practicing law without a license, Prabhune orders a trial against him for cheating and contempt of court under Section 420 of the [[Indian Penal Code]]. In the end, Abhijeet and Harshavardhan profusely thank Keshav for his help and apologise to him for what everything cost him. Before his arrest, Keshav promises Neha that he will be in her custody forever after his release from prison. Abhijeet Vaidya (Umesh Kamat) and Harshavardhan Ghodke (Akshay Pendse), two close friends and engineering college students, lie to their respective parents and plan to go for a trip to [[Mumbai]] from Harshavardhan's relatives' [[red]]-coloured [[Mahindra Scorpio|Scorpio]] car registered with the number "3417". After they reach their destination the next morning, the duo halt at a [[Filling Station|petrol pump]] in [[Chembur]] situated on the [[National Highway 48 (India)|Mumbai-Pune Highway]]. While there, Abhijeet and Harshavardhan get their car tyres filled with air by a mechanic, Prabhudeva, also known as Tambi ([[Samir Choughule]]), and also jokingly converse with a dance artist, Saraswatibai Jagaonkar ([[Nirmiti Sawant]]), whose dance troupe has halted at the petrol pump as well for their bus repair work. While Harshavardhan is getting [[petrol]] filled in their car by the petrol pump employee, Pandurang Kute, Abhijeet decides to go to buy snacks from a store located in the vicinity. The irritated store owner, Sawant (Girish Joshi), is woken up from his sleep by Abhijeet, who manages to persuade him to let him buy snacks from the store. Godbole ([[Pushkar Shrotri]]), is arranged by Suryakant, but he stutters and stammers constantly and has great difficulty in forming cohesive sentences, leading to a lot of amusement in the court. == Plot ==
Ravi Khanna ([[Amitabh Bachchan]]) is a middle-class travel agent living with his ageing mother ([[Sulochana Latkar]]), wheelchair-bound sister Renu ([[Farida Jalal]]) and young brother Billu (Alankar Joshi), and is also due to get married with his girlfriend Neela (Parveen Babi). One rainy night, one of his clients, the wealthy Surendra Sinha ([[Rehman (actor)|Rehman]]), visits Ravi's travel agency to pick up the tickets that have been reserved for him when Ravi notices a large [[emerald]] ring on his finger as Surendra Sinha impatiently taps on the counter. After leaving the premises, Surendra Sinha offers Ravi a lift in his car till the crossroads near Ravi's house as there is not a single taxi to be seen. Some time later, two detectives, CID Inspector Khurana ([[Iftekhar]]) and Inspector Kulkarni ([[Jagdish Raj]]), come to interrogate Ravi at the travel agency as Surendra Sinha was apparently abducted that night and his dead body was later shockingly recovered from a manhole. Ravi is innocent, but nervous as Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni are taking a keen interest in him since he is the last known person to have seen Surendra Sinha. The stress seems to be triggering regular headache attacks and Ravi goes to the doctor where he is sent for a brain X-Ray. The shocking diagnosis is far more serious than tension as Ravi has a brain tumour that needs to be removed, while there is also no guarantee that he will not be blind or even paraplegic as the side-effects of the brain surgery. Ravi is aghast as he is the sole provider to his family and cannot contemplate a life where he becomes a dependent so he leaves without making a decision when the choices are death and a life worse than death.

While he is aware of the fact that his brain tumour is set to consume him in six months, Ravi gets the interesting news of Surendra Sinha's grieving younger brother Narendra Sinha ([[Satyen Kappu]]) having declared a handsome reward of five [[lakh]] [[Indian rupee|rupees]] for any information about his brother's killer. In an attempt to secure his family's future, Ravi anonymously telephones Inspector Khurana at the police station and poses as an informer about Surendra Sinha's murder in a scheme to frame "himself" as the killer and collect the reward money for his family since he has nothing to lose and is going to die in six months anyway. Narendra Sinha is ready to pay out the reward after learning about the anonymous informer from Inspector Khurana. Acting upon the received information, Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni recover the evidence that has been created against himself by Ravi, who is soon arrested by them for the murder of Surendra Sinha and is sentenced to death by the [[Supreme Court of India]] for the crime, much to the consternation of his family and that of Neela. While Neela and Ravi's mother try to make some sense of Ravi's confession, also go to Narendra Sinha to beg for clemency, Ravi is in prison awaiting his execution and his another headache attack lands him up at the hospital by Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni, where Ravi miraculously undergoes a successful brain surgery with no side-effects but is now a convicted criminal of abduction, ransom and murder.

Well-aware of having condemned himself to be hung for a murder he did not commit, a regretful Ravi realises that now the only way for him to escape the consequences of his ill-advised actions is to find the real murderer of Surendra Sinha. In order to save himself from going to the gallows, Ravi manages to escape from the hospital in search of the real killer and is aided by Neela in his pursuit. As Ravi investigates the significant large emerald ring of Surendra Sinha that could lead back to the killer, he has some lucky breaks and benefits from his own logical procedural thinking and one of them is the arrival of Michael D'Souza ([[Pran]]), a kind-hearted and happy-go-lucky professional thief. Learning of Ravi's plight, Michael pledges to help him nab the real culprit after recalling that on the fateful rainy night, he had grabbed the same costly ring from the driver of a car, unmindful of the fact that it belonged to the dead Surendra Sinha on the backseat. Despite Michael's endeavour to identify the murderer, his friend Prakash ([[Mac Mohan]]), who is a black market dealer, gives Michael the advice to play a double game with Ravi by selling him out to Narendra Sinha as guilty of Surendra Sinha's murder in exchange of the reward money of five lakh rupees. Michael now takes Prakash's advice and visits Narendra Sinha's house to strike a deal regarding the capture of Ravi. Realising that the killer of Surendra Sinha is none other than his own brother Narendra Sinha, Michael claims to be knowing his real intentions when Narendra Sinha admits that Surendra Sinha's wife Mona (Ashoo) had an extramarital affair with him which Surendra Sinha discovered on the rainy night and disowned him as his brother. An offended Narendra Sinha immediately retaliated by smashing glass bottles on the head of Surendra Sinha, killing him. While he was taking Surendra Sinha's dead body away from his car for its disposal, Michael apprehended Narendra Sinha and forced him to hand him over the ring. After succeeding in throwing Surendra Sinha's dead body inside the manhole, Narendra Sinha faked his brother's abduction before the police and announced the five lakh rupees reward in order to cover up his crime. Upon learning the truth, Michael sets up a meeting point with Narendra Sinha where he will hand over Ravi to him in exchange of the "reward" money. Before the meeting, Michael deliberately visits Ravi's house to find out the reason behind his unusual actions of framing himself for the murder, where he has a change of heart instead on witnessing Renu lament Ravi's tragic separation from the family, thus taking an oath that he will reunite Ravi with his family.

In an abandoned, ramshackle wooden cottage by the riverside on the Kasara hills, Ravi and Neela meet up with Michael to learn the identity of the real killer, only to be horrified to witness Narendra Sinha shooting Michael thrice in his stomach with the fear of the latter exposing his crime. Nevertheless, after he gets hit by three gunshots, the gravely injured Michael holds Narendra Sinha at gunpoint in crossfire and confesses about his real intentions to Ravi, who leaves Neela to hold the fort and drives desperately to get a doctor back in time for Michael's treatment. On his way back with a doctor, Ravi also leads Inspector Kulkarni and the police to the scene and successfully manages to get hold of Narendra Sinha while Michael is attended by Neela, the doctor and the police. With his last breath, Michael gives his testimony of Ravi's innocence and Narendra Sinha's real intentions to Inspector Kulkarni, eventually dying in the arms of Ravi. As a result, Narendra Sinha is arrested and charged for both Surendra Sinha and Michael's murders while Ravi is acquitted by Inspector Kulkarni. The film ends with the funeral of Michael when his fulfilled oath of reuniting Ravi with his family is recalled.

== Plot ==
Ravi Khanna ([[Amitabh Bachchan]]) is a middle-class travel agent living with his ageing mother ([[Sulochana Latkar]]), wheelchair-bound sister Renu ([[Farida Jalal]]) and young brother Billu (Alankar Joshi), and is also due to get married with his girlfriend Neela (Parveen Babi). One rainy night, one of his clients, the wealthy Surendra Sinha ([[Rehman (actor)|Rehman]]), visits Ravi's travel agency to pick up the tickets that have been reserved for him when Ravi notices a large [[emerald]] ring on his finger as Surendra Sinha impatiently taps on the counter. After leaving the premises, Surendra Sinha offers Ravi a lift in his car till the crossroads near Ravi's house as there is not a single taxi to be seen. Some time later, two detectives, CID Inspector Khurana ([[Iftekhar]]) and Inspector Kulkarni ([[Jagdish Raj]]), come to interrogate Ravi at the travel agency as Surendra Sinha was apparently abducted that night and his dead body was later shockingly recovered from a manhole. Ravi is innocent, but nervous as Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni are taking a keen interest in him since he is the last known person to have seen Surendra Sinha. The stress seems to be triggering regular headache attacks and Ravi goes to the doctor where he is sent for a brain X-Ray. The shocking diagnosis is far more serious than tension as Ravi has a brain tumour that needs to be removed, while there is also no guarantee that he will not be blind or even paraplegic as the side-effects of the brain surgery. Ravi is aghast as he is the sole provider to his family and cannot contemplate a life where he becomes a dependent so he leaves without making a decision when the choices are death and a life worse than death.

While he is aware of the fact that his brain tumour is set to consume him in six months, Ravi gets the interesting news of Surendra Sinha's grieving younger brother Narendra Sinha ([[Satyen Kappu]]) having declared a handsome reward of five [[lakh]] [[Indian rupee|rupees]] for any information about his brother's killer. In an attempt to secure his family's future, Ravi anonymously telephones Inspector Khurana at the police station and poses as an informer about Surendra Sinha's murder in a scheme to frame "himself" as the killer and collect the reward money for his family since he has nothing to lose and is going to die in six months anyway. Narendra Sinha is ready to pay out the reward after learning about the anonymous informer from Inspector Khurana. Acting upon the received information, Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni recover the evidence that has been created against himself by Ravi, who is soon arrested by them for the murder of Surendra Sinha and is sentenced to death by the [[Supreme Court of India]] for the crime, much to the consternation of his family and that of Neela. While Neela and Ravi's mother try to make some sense of Ravi's confession, also go to Narendra Sinha to beg for clemency, Ravi is in prison awaiting his execution and his another headache attack lands him up at the hospital by Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni, where Ravi miraculously undergoes a successful brain surgery with no side-effects but is now a convicted criminal of abduction, ransom and murder.

Well-aware of having condemned himself to be hung for a murder he did not commit, a regretful Ravi realises that now the only way for him to escape the consequences of his ill-advised actions is to find the real murderer of Surendra Sinha. In order to save himself from going to the gallows, Ravi manages to escape from the hospital in search of the real killer and is aided by Neela in his pursuit. As Ravi investigates the significant large emerald ring of Surendra Sinha that could lead back to the killer, he has some lucky breaks and benefits from his own logical procedural thinking and one of them is the arrival of Michael D'Souza ([[Pran]]), a kind-hearted and happy-go-lucky professional thief. Learning of Ravi's plight, Michael pledges to help him nab the real culprit after recalling that on the fateful rainy night, he had grabbed the same costly ring from the driver of a car, unmindful of the fact that it belonged to the dead Surendra Sinha on the backseat. Despite Michael's endeavour to identify the murderer, his friend Prakash ([[Mac Mohan]]), who is a black market dealer, gives Michael the advice to play a double game with Ravi by selling him out to Narendra Sinha as guilty of Surendra Sinha's murder in exchange of the reward money of five lakh rupees. Michael now takes Prakash's advice and visits Narendra Sinha's house to strike a deal regarding the capture of Ravi. While there, Michael comes face-to-face with Narendra Sinha, and is shocked to recognize him as the driver of the car, whom he had grabbed Surendra Sinha's costly ring from.

Realising that the killer of Surendra Sinha is none other than his own brother Narendra Sinha, Michael claims to be knowing his real intentions when Narendra Sinha admits that Surendra Sinha's wife Mona (Ashoo) had an extramarital affair with him which Surendra Sinha discovered on the rainy night and disowned him as his brother. An offended Narendra Sinha immediately retaliated by smashing glass bottles on the head of Surendra Sinha, killing him. While he was taking Surendra Sinha's dead body away from his car for its disposal, Michael apprehended Narendra Sinha and forced him to hand him over the ring. After succeeding in throwing Surendra Sinha's dead body inside the manhole, Narendra Sinha faked his brother's abduction before the police and announced the five lakh rupees reward in order to cover up his crime. Upon learning the truth, Michael sets up a meeting point with Narendra Sinha where he will hand over Ravi to him in exchange of the "reward" money. Before the meeting, Michael deliberately visits Ravi's house to find out the reason behind his unusual actions of framing himself for the murder, where he has a change of heart instead on witnessing Renu lament Ravi's tragic separation from the family, thus taking an oath that he will reunite Ravi with his family.

In an abandoned, ramshackle wooden cottage by the riverside on the Kasara hills, Ravi and Neela meet up with Michael to learn the identity of the real killer, only to be horrified to witness Narendra Sinha shooting Michael thrice in his stomach with the fear of the latter exposing his crime. Nevertheless, after he gets hit by three gunshots, a gravely injured Michael holds Narendra Sinha at gunpoint in the crossfire and confesses about his real intentions to Ravi, who leaves Neela to hold the fort and drives desperately to get a doctor back in time for Michael's treatment. On his way back with a doctor, Ravi also leads Inspector Kulkarni and the police to the scene and successfully manages to get hold of Narendra Sinha while Michael is attended by Neela, the doctor and the police. With his last breath, Michael gives his testimony of Ravi's innocence and Narendra Sinha's real intentions to Inspector Kulkarni, eventually dying in the arms of Ravi. As a result, Narendra Sinha is arrested and charged for both Surendra Sinha and Michael's murders while all charges against Ravi are dropped by Inspector Kulkarni. The film ends with the funeral of Michael when his fulfilled oath of reuniting Ravi with his family is recalled.
