He later claimed that his comments were stretched out of the proportion.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/amu-vice-chancellor-zameeruddin-shah-sexist-female-student-smriti-irani-hrd-ministry/1/400299.html|title=AMU vice-chancellor Zameeruddin Shah says he is not sexist|website=India Today}}</ref>

Lt. Gen Shah also attributed the backwardness of Muslims to keeping their women "enslaved" and not working during Ramzan.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/lucknow/muslims-lagged-behind-because-they-kept-women-enslaved-amu-v-c/|title=Muslims lagged behind because they kept women enslaved, says AMU V-C Zameer Uddin Shah|date=5 October 2015}}</ref>

The Allahabad High Court had issued a notice over reports of the university denying a section of students access to its central library calling it a case of gender-based bias, the court also issued a notice to Lt. Gen Shah. The Court directed that adequate measures must be taken so that girls can come to the library.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/amu-central-library-woman-college-students-aligarh-v-c-zameer-uddin-shah-maulana-azad-library/1/400813.html|title=AMU library row: Allahabad High Court sends notice to V-C|website=India Today}}</ref>

The [[Supreme Court of India|Supreme Court]] has issued notice on petition challenging his appointment.<ref>{{cite web|title = VC’s appointment row: Supreme Court notice to Aligarh Muslim University|url = http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/vcs-appointment-row-supreme-court-notice-to-aligarh-muslim-university/|website = The Indian Express|date = 2015-12-01|access-date = 2015-12-14}}</ref>
