It was remade twice in Kannada - first as Sakala Kala Vallabha, starring Shashikumar and second as No 73, Shanthi Nivasa, with Sudeep. It served as a great inspiration for the 1997 Hindi film Hero No. 1.

Synopsis
The story is centered around the squabbling Sharma family, headed by their eccentric Daduji (Harindranath Chattopadhyay), which has a dubious reputation of the inability to retain a cook for more than a few months due to their ill treatment of their domestic helps. The family's disrepute spreads to such an extent that no person wants to be employed as a cook in their home, named Shanti Niwas (abode of peace).

Then one day a young man named Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) offers to work as a cook, and is hired. Raghu, however, lives up to this challenge and becomes the apple of the eye of every inmate of Shanti Niwas. He even defuses the internal squabbles and re-unites the family. But is Raghu's slate clean, or is there more to his character?

Plot
The film starts by the introduction of Shanti Niwas and its residents by Amitabh Bachchan, who is the narrator here. He points out that Shanti Niwas is a pot of ironies: Even though its name means "Home of Peace", there is no peace here. The home, which houses the Sharma family, has members who hate each other for reasons unknown. Even a servant cannot withstand the Sharmas for more than a month.

After every month, the search for a new servant has to start. Then, suddenly a servant named Raghu comes in. Even though nobody remembers asking for Raghu, they hire him. But Raghu has his own surprises in store for them. Gradually, the whole home comes to know that Raghu is not only an accomplished chef, but also an expert singer and dancer.

Raghu tells his masters that he worked for reputed veterans of given fields, who taught him something or the other. Gradually, many aces start falling out of his sleeves, causing the Sharmas to develop an attraction to him. Even Daduji, the disgruntled patriarch of the family, develops love for Raghu. The family puts so much trust in Raghu that they even unwittingly show him the box containing the family jewels.

Krishna (Jaya Bhaduri) is the recluse daughter of Daduji's dead son and daughter-in-law. On learning this, Raghu tutors her and brings her talents to the fore. He also helps in clearing up the misunderstandings and calling truces between the family members. Daduji cannot help but think that Raghu is actually a saviour sent by god. Meanwhile, nobody notices that Raghu is suspiciously eyeing the jewel box the whole time.

Meanwhile, Raghu learns that Krishna loves a boy named Arun, but the Sharmas are strictly against the union of Krishna with him. The boy also loves Krishna, but is helpless before Krishna's relatives as well. Amongst all the tangle, Raghu suddenly disappears. The Sharmas are also aghast to know that the box is missing as well.

It does not take the Sharmas long to put two and two together. At the same time, Arun shows up. The people are already angered at the turn of events and the boy's arrival, but they receive a shock when he shows them the jewelry box. He explains that he saw Raghu in a suspicious condition with the box. When he asked Raghu about the box, Raghu tried to run away. He tried to stop Raghu, even beat him up (the boy is a wrestler), but Raghu somehow managed to escape.

Stunned by this unexpected turn of events, the attitude of Sharmas towards Arun changes and they agree to get him married with Krishna out of gratitude. Krishna, however, refuses to buy the story. When the Sharmas start abusing Raghu, Arun wasn't able to take it anymore and tells them what really happened.

He tells them that he met Raghu at his own wrestling ground. He had a little friendly match with Raghu, where he suffered minor injuries from Raghu. He saw the box and asked Raghu about it. Raghu said that the box was the real reason he came there. Raghu had asked him to take the box to the Sharmas and tell them that Raghu had stolen it so that Krishna's lover can get back his place in the house.

Meanwhile, Krishna sees Raghu outside the house and asks him why did he do all this. Raghu told her that his real name was professor Prabhakar, but he took the fake name of Raghu. He had seen many families like the Sharmas which were on the brink of breaking up and hence decided to use his knowledge to stop this.

Raghu explained to him that if he lies about the box and what happened between him and Raghu, the boy will be able to marry Krishna. Raghu had promised the boy to secrecy, but the latter couldn't stand up the abuse to Raghu. A stunned Sharma family has to accept that Raghu went out of his way to save several homes like Shanti Niwas. Krishna manages to stop Raghu in time from going somewhere else.

Raghu tells her that this is his life's mission and now he has to go. The film ends with a scene of him traveling to a new destination and narration from Amitabh Bachchan that "Raghu is going to a new home. Let's hope it is not yours."

The movie was a hit. It was the 8th highest-grossing film of the year.

Plot
A man is cursed with lure while a woman is blessed with control. This is a time-tested universal truth which continues to be the same in the 20th-century as well. Dr. Madhukar (Mohan Joshi), also known as Madhu, and Seema Hirve (Neena Kulkarni) are a happy married couple living in Pune. Seema is a responsible, clever and mature housewife and Madhu is a well-known surgeon and hospital founder. Madhu's colleague Dr. Dinesh Kirtikar (Prashant Damle) is an anesthetist and a bachelor with a great sense of humour. Soon, Dr. Beena Karnik (Varsha Usgaonkar), the beautiful niece of Madhu and Seema's neighbour Mrs. Bendre (Amita Khopkar), joins as Madhu's assistant in his hospital. Madhu is instantly attracted to Beena during her tenure while Dinesh is also trying his luck with Beena, but eventually Beena gives in to Madhu's advances. After realising her husband's progress in his extramarital affair, Seema cooks up a plan and gets Beena home as her husband's second wife and showers her love and affection on Beena while teaching her husband a lesson. Amidst all this, Madhu develops a misunderstanding that Seema is also having an extramarital affair with his childhood friend Pradeep (Ramesh Bhatkar) which leads to humourous situations.

Plot
DCP Shiv Kumar (Sunil Dutt), an honest, brave and upright police officer, returns home to his wife Sheetal (Raakhee Gulzar) and their young daughter Guddi, announcing that he has been transferred to Mumbai. He has two younger brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) living in Mumbai, who are intelligent and capable youngsters but spend their time indulging in crooked schemes. After being swindled by Renu (Bindiya Goswami) and Chacha (Johnny Walker) in the city, Vijay and Ravi decide to join forces with them and another glamorous thief Sunita (Parveen Babi). However, one of their tricks backfires and lands Vijay and Ravi up in prison, but Shiv bails them out in hopes of shaping them into a much honourable life. Meanwhile, a mysterious man (Shatrughan Sinha) attempts to shoot Shiv twice in the city, but Shiv survives both times.

It eventually turns out that the mysterious man was working for a sadistic international crime lord Shakaal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who is operating from a remote island outside India while funding crime in Mumbai and rejoicing in pain of his enemies and traitors. After learning about the two attempts on Shiv's life, Vijay and Ravi advise him to find a different line of work, arguing that his profession is unpredictable, dangerous and unsuitable for a family man. However, Shiv stands firm by citing his undying patriotic commitment to his corps and his country. Due to the fact that Shiv is getting close to finding out the root of the criminal acts in Mumbai, Shakaal has Shiv abducted and brought to his island by his henchmen, where he shoots Shiv dead on the beach from his helicopter and has his dead body dumped back to Mumbai.

As Sheetal, Vijay and Ravi lament the tragic loss of Shiv, the mysterious man approaches them and introduces himself as Rakesh, a marksman and former circus performer who used to shoot targets blindfolded. Rakesh confesses that he was blackmailed to work for Shakaal, who had held his wife hostage, and that he deliberately missed on the two previous attempts on Shiv's life in hopes of buying time to save his wife. However, Shakaal had already deduced this and set up Rakesh's wife in a sabotaged car in retaliation, resulting in her death in a fiery car accident. Upon learning this, Vijay and Ravi join hands with Rakesh in hopes of defeating the underworld of Shakaal together in revenge for the deaths of both Shiv and Rakesh's wife. To that end, the trio seeks the aid of a legless cripple Abdul (Mazhar Khan), who provides them information about Shakaal's contraband warehouse in Mumbai. Even though the trio manages to blow up the warehouse, Shakaal retaliates by having his henchmen kill Abdul and abduct Sheetal.

Though it would have appeared that the trio is able to concede defeat over Sheetal's imminent fate, they are approached by one of Shakaal's aides Jagmohan (Mac Mohan), who offers them his help to gain entry in Shakaal's island as he was brutally injured by Shakaal for his previous failure. Posing as a dance troupe, the trio, along with Sunita, Renu and Chacha, manages to enter the island and performs for Shakaal, who later captures them all and reveals that he had only sent Jagmohan (who was faking his injuries) to trap them. However, Chacha creates a commotion that allows the trio to be freed and beat Jagmohan and all the rest of Shakaal's henchmen to death.

Just as the trio finally succeeds in capturing Shakaal and is able to kill him using his automatic gadgets, Sheetal intervenes and refuses to let them do so, pointing out that their actions can be disrespectful to the law that Shiv upholds. The arguing commotion allows Shakaal to free himself and attempt to shoot Sheetal, forcing the trio to fatally shoot him down in defense. With his last breath, Shakaal pulls the lever and sets the island to self-destruct, however, the trio, Sunita, Renu, Sheetal and Chacha are all able to escape from the exploding island and fly off safely from Shakaal's helicopter, satisfied that they have beaten Shakaal in his tracks for good.
Production
Logistical issues relating to other projects in which the cast were involved meant that Shaan took three years to make. While Sholay drew its inspiration from the American Western and Spaghetti Western films, Shaan took its lead from the James Bond films with fancy sets and beautiful costumes. Shakaal, the bald villain (originally to be played by Sanjeev Kumar) played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda, was based on the James Bond villain, Blofeld.

A large golden eagle is prominent in Shakaal's island lair and in the Bollywood obligatory final song-and-dance. The eagle is reminiscent of the golden lamb in Cecile DeMille's Ten Commandments; construction on the golden eagle required outside experts to be flown in and cost, in Rupees, the equivalent of the chariot scene in Ben-Hur.

Sippy wanted to repeat the cast of Sholay for this film, but due to date issues, Sunil Dutt played the role initially offered to Sanjeev Kumar, Bindiya Goswami played the role initially offered to Hema Malini, and Shashi Kapoor was selected when Dharmendra declined to do the character of Ravi.

The film was set and partially filmed on the island of Steep Holm.

Parveen Babi suffered her first anxiety attack when she completed shooting of the song Pyar Karnewale. Just after the shooting of that song, there was a scene in the film where Parveen Babi is inside the car and then Amitabh Bachchan gets in the car. The scene was later shot when Parveen Babi returned from the U.S. and she recommenced work by shooting this scene.
The version of the song "Yamma Yamma" is not the final recorded song, that is used in the movie. Its was a rehearsed copy sung by Late Mohd Rafi, and the actual recording was scheduled for later, which was used by RD Burman in the movie due to the sudden untimely death of Mohd Rafi before the final recording. However, it turned amazingly outstanding. This is the only song where Mohd Rafi and RD Burman sing a duet together.song "mittua" inspired by Bony M , Rasputin song.
*Given their off-screen antipathy, Shatrughan Sinha demanded an extra Rs.25,000 to work with Amitabh Bachchan and received the same.
Plot
DCP Shiv Kumar (Sunil Dutt), an honest, brave and upright police officer, returns home to his wife Sheetal (Rakhee Gulzar) and their young daughter Guddi, announcing that he has been transferred to Mumbai. He has two younger brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) living in Mumbai. They are intelligent, capable youngsters but are conmen who indulge in crooked schemes in the city. After being swindled by Renu (Bindiya Goswami) and Chacha (Johnny Walker) in the city, Vijay and Ravi decide to join forces with them and another glamorous thief Sunita (Parveen Babi). However, one of their tricks backfires and lands Vijay and Ravi in prison. Nevertheless, Shiv bails them out and hopes to shape them into a much honourable life. Meanwhile, a mysterious man (Shatrughan Sinha) attempts to shoot Shiv twice in the city, but Shiv survives both times.

After learning about the two attempts on Shiv's life, Vijay and Ravi advise him to find a different line of work, arguing that his current profession is unpredictable, dangerous and unsuitable for a family man. However, Shiv stands firm by citing his undying patriotic commitment to his corps and his country. It eventually turns out that the mysterious man was working for an invincible, sadistic international crime lord Shakaal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who is operating from a remote island outside India while funding crime in Mumbai and rejoicing in pain of his enemies and traitors. Due to the fact that Shiv is getting closer to finding out the root of the criminal acts in Mumbai, Shakaal has Shiv captured and brought to his island by his henchmen, where he shoots Shiv to his death on a beach from his helicopter and has his corpse dumped back to Mumbai.

As Sheetal, Vijay and Ravi lament the tragic loss of Shiv, the mysterious man approaches them, introducing himself as Rakesh, a marksman and former circus performer who can shoot targets blindfolded. Rakesh confesses that Shakaal had held his wife hostage and blackmailed him to shoot Shiv, and that he deliberately missed on the two previous occasions in hopes of buying time to save his wife. However, Shakaal had already deduced this and arranged Rakesh's wife to be killed in the accident of a sabotaged car in retaliation. Upon learning this, Vijay and Ravi ally with Rakesh in hopes of killing Shakaal in revenge of both Shiv and Rakesh's wife's deaths. To that end, the trio seek the aid of a legless beggar Abdul (Mazhar Khan), who provides them information about Shakaal's contraband warehouse in Mumbai. Even though the trio manage to destroy the warehouse, Shakaal retaliates by having his henchmen kill Abdul and abduct Sheetal.

Though it would have appeared that the trio are able to concede defeat over Sheetal's imminent fate, they are approached by one of Shakaal's aides Jagmohan (Mac Mohan), who offers them his help to gain entry at Shakaal's island as he was brutally crippled by Shakaal for his previous failure. Posing as a dance troupe, the trio (along with Renu, Chacha and Sunita) are able to enter the island and perform for Shakaal, who later captures them all and reveals that he had only sent Jagmohan (who was faking his injuries) to trap them. However, Chacha creates a commotion that allows the trio to be freed and kill Jagmohan and the rest of Shakaal's henchmen.

Just as the trio finally manage to capture Shakaal and are about to kill him, Sheetal intervenes and refuses to let them, pointing out that doing so can be disrespectful to the law that Shiv upholds. The arguing commotion allows Shakaal to free himself, forcing the trio to fatally shoot him down in self-defense. With his last breath, Shakaal cunningly sets the island to self-destruct and states that he would not let someone else emerge victorious as well. Despite this, the trio, Sheetal, Renu, Chacha and Sunita are all able to escape from the exploding island and fly off safely from the villains' helicopter, satisfied that they have beaten Shakaal in his tracks for good.
Plot
Ravi Khanna (Amitabh Bachchan) is a middle-class travel agent living with his ageing mother (Sulochana Latkar), wheelchair-bound sister Renu (Farida Jalal) and young brother Billu (Alankar Joshi), and is also due to get married with his girlfriend Neela (Parveen Babi). One rainy night, one of his clients, the wealthy Surendra Sinha (Rehman), visits Ravi's travel agency to pick up the tickets that have been reserved for him when Ravi notices a large emerald ring on his finger as Surendra Sinha impatiently taps on the counter. After leaving the premises, Surendra Sinha offers Ravi a lift in his car till the crossroads near Ravi's house as there is not a single taxi to be seen. Some time later, two detectives, CID Inspector Khurana (Iftekhar) and Inspector Kulkarni (Jagdish Raj), come to interrogate Ravi at the travel agency as Surendra Sinha was apparently abducted that night and his dead body was later shockingly recovered from a manhole. Ravi is innocent, but nervous as Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni are taking a keen interest in him since he is the last known person to have seen Surendra Sinha. The stress seems to be triggering regular headache attacks and Ravi goes to the doctor where he is sent for a brain X-Ray. The shocking diagnosis is far more serious than tension as Ravi has a brain tumour that needs to be removed, while there is also no guarantee that he will not be blind or even paraplegic as the side-effects of the brain surgery. Ravi is aghast as he is the sole provider to his family and cannot contemplate a life where he becomes a dependent so he leaves without making a decision when the choices are death and a life worse than death.

While he is aware of the fact that his brain tumour is set to consume him in six months, Ravi gets the interesting news of Surendra Sinha's grieving younger brother Narendra Sinha (Satyen Kappu) having declared a handsome reward of five lakh rupees for any information about his brother's killer. In an attempt to secure his family's future, Ravi anonymously telephones Inspector Khurana at the police station and poses as an informer about Surendra Sinha's murder in a scheme to frame "himself" as the killer and collect the reward money for his family since he has nothing to lose and is going to die in six months anyway. Narendra Sinha is ready to pay out the reward after learning about the anonymous informer from Inspector Khurana. Acting upon the received information, Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni recover the evidence that has been created against himself by Ravi, who is soon arrested by them for the murder of Surendra Sinha and is sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of India for the crime, much to the consternation of his family and that of Neela. While Neela and Ravi's mother try to make some sense of Ravi's confession, also go to Narendra Sinha to beg for clemency, Ravi is in prison awaiting his execution and his another headache attack lands him up at the hospital by Inspector Khurana and Inspector Kulkarni, where Ravi miraculously undergoes a successful brain surgery with no side-effects but is now a convicted criminal of abduction, ransom and murder.

Well-aware of having condemned himself to be hung for a murder he did not commit, a regretful Ravi realises that now the only way for him to escape the consequences of his ill-advised actions is to find the real murderer of Surendra Sinha. In order to save himself from going to the gallows, Ravi manages to escape from the hospital in search of the real killer and is aided by Neela in his pursuit. As Ravi investigates the significant large emerald ring of Surendra Sinha that could lead back to the killer, he has some lucky breaks and benefits from his own logical procedural thinking and one of them is the arrival of Michael D'Souza (Pran), a kind-hearted and happy-go-lucky professional thief. Learning of Ravi's plight, Michael pledges to help him nab the real culprit after recalling that on the fateful rainy night, he had grabbed the same costly ring from the driver of a car, unmindful of the fact that it belonged to the dead Surendra Sinha on the backseat. Michael's endeavour to identify the murderer later takes him to Surendra Sinha's house where he runs into his real murderer and sets up a meeting point to settle the issue. The climax alternates between a gravely injured Michael holding the murderer at gunpoint while Ravi leaves Neela to hold the fort and drives desperately to get a doctor back in time. In the end, the real killer of Surendra Sinha is surprisingly revealed to be Narendra Sinha before the police and Ravi becomes a free man but not without Michael paying a heavy price in managing to solve the mystery.
Plot
Ravi Khanna (Amitabh Bachchan) is a middle-class travel agent living with his ageing mother (Sulochana Latkar), his wheelchair-bound sister, Renu (Farida Jalal), and his young brother, Billu (Alankar Joshi), and is also due to get married with his wealthy girlfriend, Neela Rajvansh (Parveen Babi). Some time later, two detectives, CID Inspector Khurana (Iftekhar) and Inspector Kulkarni (Jagdish Raj), come to interrogate Ravi at his office as Surendra Sinha was mysteriously abducted that night and his dead body was later shockingly recovered from a manhole. Ravi is innocent, but nervous as Inspector Khurana and Kulkarni are taking a keen interest in him since he is the last known person to have seen Surendra Sinha and seeks legal advice from his lawyer friend, Advocate Rane (Shiv Kumar).

However, the stress seems to be triggering severe headaches, so Ravi ends up at the place of Dr. Shah (Sajjan) and is sent for an X-Ray. The news is not as good as Ravi would have liked as Dr. Shah suggests a brain surgery, explaining that Ravi shockingly has a tumour in his brain, one that that will slowly grow and, if not removed, cause his death. Ravi is willing to do anything to live, even have himself operated upon, but Dr. Shah has a few caveats that the brain surgery could cure him completely, but there is no guarantee that even if he survives the brain surgery, he will not be blind, or even a paraplegic. Ravi is aghast as he is the sole provider to his family and cannot contemplate a life where he becomes a dependent, so he leaves without making a decision when the choices are death and a life worse than death. Ravi returns home, deep in thought, and his family's affection and their implicit trust in his ability to take care of them only serve to increase his conflict. The next morning, at work, Ravi gets the news of Narendra Sinha (Satyen Kappu), younger brother of Surendra Sinha, having declared a handsome reward of ₹500,000 for any information about his brother's killer.

Driven against the wall and worried about his family's future, Ravi anonymously telephones Inspector Khurana at the police station and poses as an informer about Surendra Sinha's murder in a scheme to frame himself as the murderer and collect the reward money for his family. After learning about the anonymous telephone call, Narendra is ready to pay out the reward, but Inspector Khurana tells him that the money has to be paid to a lawyer whom the informer suggests and a sealed envelope will also be deposited with the same lawyer. Once the money is paid, the informer will inform the police who the killer is, and will provide the evidence as well. Narendra is willing to go through with the proposal. Now that his proposal has been accepted, Ravi meticulously sets the stage, even leaving sealed instructions and a cover letter with Rane, who is rather bewildered at all the cloak-and-dagger stuff until Inspector Khurana calls to confirm that the money mentioned in the covering letter will be entrusted to him. Acting upon the received information, Inspector Khurana and Kulkarni recover the evidence and it is sent to the laboratory for testing. Soon, Ravi is arrested for the murder of Surendra Sinha by Inspector Kulkarni and is sentenced to death by the court for the crime, much to the consternation of his family, and that of Neela and her father ([[D.
While Neela and Ravi's mother try to make some sense of Ravi's confession, also go to Narendra to beg for clemency, Ravi is in prison awaiting his execution, and another critical seizure lands him up at the hospital, where, serendipitously, it is Dr. Shah who examines him. Knowing Ravi's medical history, Dr. Shah wastes no time in getting him into the operation theatre, and Ravi miraculously undergoes a successful brain surgery with no side-effects, but Dr. Shah is shattered to learn that he had saved his patient on the operating table only to see him hang for murder. Well aware that he has condemned himself to be hung for a murder he did not commit, Ravi, during Neela and Rane's permitted visit in the hospital, asks Rane if he could appeal and tell the truth in the court as the sealed envelope he left anonymously in his care will confirm his story after all. However, Rane's response tells Ravi that he is his friend as well as his lawyer, so the court would not believe anything Rane says, and that the only way for Ravi to escape the consequences of his ill-advised actions is to find the real murderer of Surendra Sinha. In order to save himself from going to the gallows, Ravi escapes from the police custody in search of the real culprit and is aided by Neela in his pursuit.

As Ravi investigates the significant large emerald ring of Surendra Sinha that could lead back to the killer, he has some lucky breaks and benefits from his own logical procedural thinking, and one of them is the arrival of Michael D'Souza (Pran), a kind-hearted and happy-go-lucky professional thief, fencing his wares through Prakash (Mac Mohan). After learning of Ravi's plight, Michael pledges to help him nab the real culprit, recalling that on the fateful rainy night, he had grabbed the same costly ring from the driver of a car, unmindful of the fact that it belonged to the dead Surendra Sinha on the backseat. Michael's endeavour to identify the murderer later takes him to Surendra Sinha's house where he runs into his real murderer and sets up a meeting point to settle the issue. In the climax, Michael manages to solve the mystery but not without paying a heavy price, which leads to a wounded Michael holding the murderer at gunpoint while Ravi drives desperately to get a doctor back in time.
Released in India on 6 December 1974, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi and Pran in lead roles and Farida Jalal, Sulochana Latkar, Satyen Kappu, Iftekhar, Jagdish Raj and Rehman in supporting roles.

The movie is loosely inspired by two English movies of 1970 - Zig Zag and Cold Sweat. The film was later remade in Telugu by director K. Raghavendra Rao as Raja (1976) starring Shobhan Babu and Jayasudha. It was also remade in Tamil as Naan Vazhavaippen (1979) with Sivaji Ganeshan and K. R. Vijaya , in Gujarati as Naseeb No Khel (1982) and in Malayalam as Ee Kaikalil (1986). The movie was also an inspiration for the 2008 movie Jimmy.

One rainy night, one of his clients, the wealthy Surendra Sinha (Rehman), visits his travel agency to pick up the tickets that have been reserved for him when Ravi notices a large emerald ring on his finger. After leaving the premises, Surendra Sinha offers Ravi a lift in his car till the crossroads near Ravi's house as there is not a single taxi to be seen.

Soon, Ravi is arrested for the murder of Surendra Sinha by Inspector Kulkarni and is sentenced to death by the court for the crime, much to the consternation of his family, and that of Neela and her father (D. K. Sapru).

While Neela and Ravi's mother try to make some sense of Ravi's confession, also go to Narendra to beg for clemency, Ravi is in prison awaiting his execution, and another critical seizure lands him up at the hospital, where, serendipitously, it is Dr. Shah who examines him.
