Close to the railway station is a museum which has exhibits of vintage locomotives. It was established in 1979 by the [[Indian Railways]], and the second such museum after the one in [[Delhi]]. One of the exhibits is the Maharani Saloon Carriage, with a kitchen and royal toilet, dating back to 1899, belonging to the [[Royal family of Mysore]]. Wooden doors and pillars of the old [[Srirangapatna railway station]] are also on display. The first railway line in this region was open in 1857 connecting Madurai to [[Tiruchirappalli Junction railway station|Trichirappalli {Trichy}]] via [[Dindigul Junction railway station|Dindigul]] and onward. In the following year, the railway line from Madurai to the port city of [[Thoothukudi railway station|Thoothukudi]] was completed. In the same year, another line branching off from [[Vanchi Maniyachchi Junction railway station|Vanchi Maniyachchi]] to [[Tirunelveli Junction railway station|Tirunelveli]] was opened.<ref name="sr1"/>

===Inception===
The Government decided to locate the Headquarters of the Division, which includes Tinnevely also, at Madurai.<ref>https://eparlib.nic.in/bitstream/123456789/56057/1/lsd_01_14_23-11-1956.pdf page 3</ref> The Madurai railway division was formed in 1956, comprising the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram line, Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Tirunelveli-Madurai line, [[Kollam–Sengottai branch line|Kollam-Sengottai]]-[[Tirunelveli Junction railway station|Tirunelveli]] line, Rameswaram-Manamaadurai-Madurai line, Manamadurai-Karaikudi-Tiruchirappalli line, Madurai-Dindigul-Pollachi line Karaikudi-Thiruduraipoondi-Thiruvarur line and the other branches of these lines. All lines currently in use have been converted to Broad Gauge while remaining sections namely Madurai-Bodinayakkanur section are in the process of gauge conversion.

In 1979, certain sections of the railway division were carved out to form the [[Thiruvananthapuram railway division]]. The [[Metre Gauge]] sections of Madurai division were retained, while all the newly laid [[Broad Gauge]] Sections of Madurai Division were transferred to Trivandrum Division. Th division spans across two states namely Tamil Nadu and Kerala. ==Performance and earnings==
The division won the inter-divisional overall efficiency - Best Division - award for its performance and earnings in the financial year of 2013. The total originating earnings for the year 2013-14 is Rs 576.29 crore as against the 2012-13 actual of Rs 523.68 crore leading to a 10% growth in overall earnings. On the punctuality front, the division achieved 96.2% for express and mail trains and 96.8% for passenger trains against the target of 96 per cent. Cash awards and merit certificates were distributed to officers and stations for their performance and maintenance. The name '''Chovva''' is believed to be derived from the Malayalam word "Chovvu" meaning propriety. Mele and Thazhe are Upper and Lower respectively, indicating that Mele Chovva is relatively at higher altitude compared with Thazhe chovva (a few meters)

Chovva comes under Kannur [[Municipal Corporations of Kerala|Municipal Corporations]]. Other residential suburbs are in Kannur Municipal Corporation [[Talap]], [[Thana, Kannur|Thana]], [[Kakkad, Kannur|Kakkad]], [[Chalad]], [[Kannur City]], [[Mundayad]], [[Thottada]], [[Chelora]] etc.

==Thazhe Chovva==
Thazhe Chovva is a small town on [[National Highway 66]] between [[Kannur]] and [[Thalassery]]. It is approx 4 km from [[Kannur]] towards south. The nearest Railway station is [[Kannur South railway station]] which is about a kilometer from the Thazhe chovva market. Chala-Nadal bypass road which links Thazhe Chovva with Nadal and [[Chala]] opened in 2001. This bypass is relatively a straight road saves time by avoiding Chovva railway crossing and the Nadal railway crossing on National Highway 66.

The famous ''The Cannanore Co-operative spinning mills'' which employees hundreds people for decades is situated in this town. ''Chovva Juma Masjid'' on NH 66 and ''Sree Muthappan Temple'' at Charapuram (about a kilometre from Thazhe Chovva on the Thillanur Road) are the two main places of worship in Chovva. The ''Kottungal Kavvu'' on S.N college road is another place of worship which has yearly festivals with the traditional Muthappan [[Theyyam]]. ''Muthu Mariyamman Kovil'' & ''Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Kovil'' are other two famous devi kshetram (Temple) for [[navaratri]] festivities situated near railway gate on S.N.college road. ''Masjid Da'awa'' (Thanke Kunnu Road) and ''Hamza Palli'' (Elayavoor Road) are other two mosques in here. Thazhe Chovva is also a home of small community settlements from Andhra Pradesh (Erumakkudi) and Tamil Nadu (Labbatheru).

There is a small river with a bridge that flows through the town locally known as ''Chovva Thodu'' or ''Kaanaam River'' and merges to [[Arabian sea]] . The only fish market available in Chovva situated near chovva thodu. The major roads branches from this town are City Road (leads to City through Thayyil), Kappad Road (leads to Anjarakandi through Kappad), Elayavoor Road and Thanke Kunnu Road (leads to Attadappa)

One of the oldest reading room and library in Kannur situated in Thazhe Chovva Tezhukkil Peedika. Chovva Govt.
