==Demographics==
The Central Lok Sabha constituency is dominated by minority voters, and is challenge for candidates, with having to get the support of both linguistic and religious minorities. The constituency has around 5.5 lakh [[Tamil People]], 4.5 lakh [[Muslims]] and about 2 lakh [[Christianity in India|Christians]]. There is also a significant number of [[Marwari people|Marwaris]] and [[Jain community|Jains]], especially around [[Chickpet]] and Gandhinagar suburbs. The Tamil population is concentrated around the suburbs of [[Shivajinagar, Bangalore|Shivajinagar]], [[Ulsoor]], Gandhinagar, Seshadripuram and are a deciding factor for the winning candidate. ==History of the constituency==
Post independence Bangalore south constituency used to come under Mysore state. Mysore state was a state within the [[Dominion of India|Union of India]] from 1947 until 1956. [[T. Madiah Gowda]], freedom fighter, a lawyer by profession won in [[1st Lok Sabha|1st lok sabha]] election from Bangalore south constituency.

As a result of the [[States Reorganisation Act]] on 1 November 1956 few constituencies were added to Karnataka state and Bangalore north and Bangalore south constituencies were merged to make Bangalore constituency. [[H. C. Dasappa|H.C Dasappa]] got elected from Bangalore constituency from 1957 to 1962. He also served as the [[Minister of Railways (India)|Railway Minister of India]] under [[Jawaharlal Nehru]] [[Fourth Nehru ministry|in 1963-64]]. Later former Chief Minister [[K. Hanumanthaiah|Kengal Hanumanthiah]] won this constituency three consecutive times.

Post Emergency and reorganization of constituencies across the country, this Lok Sabha seat came into existence as Bangalore South in 1977. Since then this constituency has gone to the polls 12 times. BJP has won 8 times, Janata Party 3 times and Congress just once. In 1984, [[V. S. Krishna Iyer]] won the elections. The elections were necessitated due to the murder of [[Indira Gandhi]] sitting Prime Minister. [[Rajiv Gandhi]] called for elections and Congress went on to win a landslide. V. S. Krishna Iyer,<ref>{{cite web |title=A short biography of V. S. He was an ex Mayor of Bangalore and was responsible for sanctioning the Cauvery water supply scheme for Bangalore city. 1989 elections saw the Congress winning the seat for the first time with former Karnataka Chief Minister [[R. Gundu Rao]]<ref>{{cite web |title=A short biography of R. S. Krishna Iyer. This is the only time that Congress has won the elections in this constituency.

1991 elections were necessitated when the [[Chandra Shekhar]] led government fell and elections were called. Gundu Rao and thus BJP won the elections for the 1st time in Bangalore South. BJP won 4 seats in this elections from Karnataka.

In 1996, BJP fielded an young candidate [[Ananth Kumar]]<ref>{{cite web |title=A short biography of H N Ananth Kumar|url=http://loksabhaph.nic.in/Members/MemberBioprofile.aspx?mpsno=20&lastls=16|website=loksabhaph.nic.in|publisher=loksabha| access-date=2020-05-15|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200515182050/http://loksabhaph.nic.in/Members/MemberBioprofile.aspx?mpsno=20&lastls=16 | archive-date=2020-05-15}}</ref> who won the elections against Varalakshmi Gundu Rao, wife of R Gundu Rao.<ref name="ananthkumar"/> He went on to win 5 consecutive elections. Interestingly all his nearest opponents were different candidates but they were all from Congress. Till the rise of Ananth Kumar the seat was won by legal luminaries, freedom fighters, Chief Minister and senior Economists. Ananth Kumar went on to become one of the most powerful and influential politicians from Karnataka, serving both the [[Premiership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee|Vajpayee government]] and the [[Premiership of Narendra Modi|Modi government]] in multiple capacities.

Anand Kumar succumbed to cancer in 2018 during the course of the [[16th Lok Sabha]],<ref name="ananthkumar"/> and in 2019, BJP was forced to field a new face due to his untimely death. Bengaluru North held its first elections in 1951 and its first member of parliament (MP) was Keshava Iyengar of the [[Indian National Congress]] (INC). He was re-elected in the next election in 1957. [[K. Hanumanthaiya]] also of the INC represented this constituency for three consecutive terms from 1962 to 1977. [[C. K. Jaffer Sharief]] of the INC was its MP for five consecutive terms from 1977–1996 before being denied ticket in the 1996 election. [[C. This brought to an end a 45-year period where this constituency had been represented by a member of the INC from 1951–96. Sharief became the MP once again in 1998. T. Sangliana]] of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) represented this constituency in 2004. D. B. Chandre Gowda also of the BJP was elected in the 2009 election. As of the latest elections in 2019, its current MP is [[D. V. Sadananda Gowda]] of the BJP who was also the incumbent [[Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers]]. Of the 17 elections held in this constituency, the most successful party is the INC who have won on 12 occasions.
