==Plot==
Murugan ([[Bharath (actor)|Bharath]]) is a diligent scooter mechanic in Madurai and life goes on smoothly for the young man until a rich student Aishwarya ([[Sandhya (actress)|Sandhya]]) sets an eye on him. The infatuation reaches a dangerous level when she coaxes Murugan to take her from the constraint of her family, who have other plans about her future. Initially, Murugan hesitates to love her as she belongs to a rich family but later understands her true love and reciprocates. The couple knows that Aishwarya's family will not agree for the wedding and decide to run away to Chennai. Murugan's friend Stephen ([[Kadhal Sukumar|Sukumar]]) helps them in their hour of crisis and the lovers unite in marriage. But Aishwariya's family dotes on her and is not going to give up so easily. The family tracks down the couple and reaches Chennai to meet them. But the family members pretend as if they had agreed for the wedding and convince them to return to Madurai along with them. On the way back to Madurai, the family members take the couple to their farmland where Aishwarya's relatives have gathered. They all beat Murugan and Aishwarya's father wants her to remove the mangalyam tied by Murugan. Aishwarya fears that if she does not obey her father, then Murugan will be killed and also Aishwarya agrees to marry another man to save Murugan's life. Murugan is heavily beaten and let go of the place. After a few years, Aishwarya while travelling with her husband and her child, comes across Murugan where she finds him as a mentally deranged beggar roaming near a traffic signal. Aishwarya faints realizing it is Murugan and gets admitted to the nearby hospital. At night she runs from the hospital to the same signal in search of Murugan and she finds him sitting over there. Aishwarys cries to Murugan and feels bad that she was responsible for his pathetic situation. Aishwarya's husband also comes to the spot and understands his wife's situation. He admits Murugan in a mental health centre and also takes care of him.

The movie ends with title cards mentioning that this is a true incident narrated by the girl's husband to the director during a train journey which prompted him to make a film.

After the average response of his debut film ''[[Samurai (2002 film)|Samurai]]'' (2002), Balaji was supposed to direct again Vikram in a new venture which however got shelved.<ref>http://www.nilacharal.com/enter/cinebit/c66.html</ref> During the shoot of ''[[Anniyan]]'' (2005), Balaji narrated the plot of ''Kaadhal'' to his mentor Shankar who agreed to produce the film after hearing the script.

The film was initially turned down by actors [[Dhanush]] and [[Shanthanu Bhagyaraj]], before Balaji Sakthivel consulted Shankar's advice for the lead role. Telugu actor [[Ram Pothineni|Ram]] also auditioned for the lead role but was unsuccessful. ==Plot==
Ramakrishnan ([[Prabhu Ganesan]]) is a rich businessman in Ooty who owns an advertising company and is married to Mythili ([[Abhirami (actress)|Abhirami]]) who is very possessive about her husband. Mythili always suspects her husband fearing that he would end up having an affair with some other girl and this brings frequent quarrels between the couple. But Ramakrishnan is a kind hearted gentleman and he takes care of his wife with great love.

Thirunavukkarasu ([[Prabhu Deva]]) is a poor photographer in the same town and initially, Ramakrishnan misunderstands Thiru to be a rogue. Later understands his good nature and provides him a job in his own company. Thiru is very loyal to Ramakrishnan and Mythili and respects Ramakrishnan as his brother. Ramakrishnan is also very kind to Thiru. One day, Thiru meets a girl Susi ([[Gayathri Raghuram]]) and the both fall in love with each other. Susi is a social activist who voices for women empowerment.

Vishwa ([[Livingston (actor)|Livingston]]) is a close friend of Ramakrishnan and is married to Amudha ([[Vindhya (actress)|Vindhya]]). But Vishwa is a play boy and has affairs with so many girls. One day, a small quarrel erupts between Ramakrishnan and Mythili following which Ramakrishnan worries thinking about his wife's continuous suspecting behaviour. Vishwa plans to relax Ramakrishnan by engaging a call girl Thilothama ([[Monal]]).

Ramakrishnan although not interested in it, finally decides to spend some time with Thiliothama when Mythili is away to Tirupathi. Thilothama comes to Ramakrishnan's guest house where Thiru lives. Suddenly, Mythili cancels her trip and returns home. On the way, she finds Ramakrishnan's car in Thiru's home and she also comes to Thiru's home. Mythili gets shocked to see Thilothama and Ramakrishnan in Thiru's home. Ramakrishnan suddenly manages the situation by lying that Thilothama is none other than Thiru's lover. Mythili believes this while Thiru does not reveal the truth knowing that it would separate Ramakrishnan from Mythili.

Then it is cat and mouse game where Thiru tries to act as Thilothama's love in front of Mythili, at the same time tries hard not to get caught by Susi as she is short-tempered and hates someone lying to her. Finally, Mythili and Susi get to know about the lies told by Thiru and Ramakrishnan. Ramakrishnan and Thiru try hard to find Thilothama and make her tell the truth that nothing happened between them. But to their surprise, Thilothama committed suicide and they have no other proof now.

Susi decides to break up with Thiru while Mythili applies for divorce with Ramakrishnan. Finally, in the court, Ramakrishnan expresses how much he loves Mythili and tells all the truth and requests her to believe him. Also, Amudha and Vishwa convince Susi and Mythili whereby Amudha says that she very well knows about Vishwa's affair with so many girls but she still lives with a hope of getting him back as a loyal husband someday. Mythili and Susi understand Ramakrishnan and Thiru's good nature and they unite in the end.

Sakthi Chidambaram revealed that the story was based on a real life incident that had happened to his friend, but altered the happenings to present it in a comedy format.
