Bhattacharya was born at Erikati in [[Faridpur district]] of [[East Bengal and Assam]]. He joined in the revolutionary ''Madaripur group'' of [[Madaripur District|Madaripur]]. While a student, Bhattacharya participated in the [[Chittagong armoury raid]] on 18 April 1930.
