Jhargran district is one of the districts of the Indian state of West Bengal.
History[edit]
Jhargram district was carved out of Paschim Medinipur district on 4 April 2017. [1]
Raja Sarbeswar Malla Deb was the founder of the Jhargram Raj. He started ruling the area in the fifteenth century. The antecedents of the family is unclear. There is a view that they belonged to a royal family of Rajasthan. They had come for a pilgrimage to Puri and during their return journey one of the brothers decided to stay back. The other thinking is that the family branched off from the Bishnupur raj family. Raja Raghunath Malla Deb being the sixteenth generation of the family and his descendants are better known for their prowess and charitable activities. Raja Birendra Roy involved the family in business activities, which has enabled the family to cope up with the changing modern times. He became a member of the West Bengal legislative assembly thrice. The descendants of the royal family presently look after their business interests and have an interest in politics.[2][3]
Geography[edit]
Jhargram district covers an area of 3037.64 sq km.[1]
Jhargram district is an undulating area with infertile soil. It is severely drought prone. It lies on the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau as it gradually slopes down towards east.[1][4]
Jhargram district has 1 subdivision, 10 police stations, 8 community development blocks, 8 panchayat samities, 79 gram panchayats, 2,996 mouzas, 2513 inhabited villages, 1 municipality and 1 census town. The single subdivision is Jhargram subdivision. The single municipality is at Jhargram and the census town is Silda.[1]
The community development blocks in Jhargram district are: Gopiballavpur I, Gopiballavpur II, Nayagram, Jhargram, Sankrail, Binpur I, Binpur II and Jamboni.[5]
Demographics[edit]
As per the 2011 census, Jhargram district had a population of 1,136,548, of which 96.52% lived in the rural areas and only 3.48% lived in urban areas. The scheduled castes formed 20.11% of the total population and 29.37% belonged to the scheduled tribes.[1]
The literacy rate of Jhargram district (earlier subdivion in Paschim Medinipur district) has increased from 25.20% in 1971 to 61.56% in 2011.[6]

Agriculture[edit]
The net cropped area in Jhargram district is 595,210 ha and the area cropped more than once is 312,495 ha. Major crops cultivated in Jhargram district are: cereals (rice, wheat, maize), pulses,oil seeds, potato and other vegetables, jute and fruits.[7]
Transport[edit]
National Highway 6 (popularly known as Bombay Road) and the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai line of the South Eastern Railway passes through this district.[1]

- Chikligarh Sacred Grove and Kanak Durga temple at Jamboni, 15 km from Jhargram, but 1.5 km from Chilkigarh Raj Palace - across the Dulung river. Chilkigarh Sacred Grove is a bio-diversity park.
- Chilkigarh Raj Palace - 1.5 km, across the Dulung river, from Kanak Durga temple.
- Eco-tourism centra and Tribal Museum – 2 km from Jhargram.
