Electric Loco Shed, Gomoh is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for electric locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Gomoh of the East Central Railway zone in Jharkhand, India. It is one of the three electric loco sheds in the ECR the others being at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar (DDU) and Barauni (BJU). As of May 2022 there are 173 locomotives in the Shed.

History[edit]

After Eastern Railway (now under East Central Railways) set a deadline to eliminate all steam locomotive operations by 1990, a push was given towards establishing electric locomotion as the primary motive power, and the Steam locomotive sheds were decommissioned.[1] To meet the needs of exponentially increasing rail traffic on the new continuous broad gauge lines from Jharkhand and Bihar to rest of India with the completion of gauge conversion, the Gomoh was selected by Indian railways for a new electric locomotive shed.[2] In 1965 the Shed was inaugurated with holding of 50 locos. Initially the holding kept on increasing and now it has a sanctioned capacity of 120 locos. It is the first electric loco Shed in India to hold WAG-9 and WAP-7 locomotives. It formerly holded WAG-7 locos but now transferred to other sheds.

Operations[edit]

Being one of the three electric engine sheds in East Central Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of electric locomotives are carried out here. It has the sanctioned capacity of 120 engine units. Beyond the operating capacity, this shed houses a total of 173 engine units, including 132 WAG-9 and 41 WAP-7. It also housed a few WAM-4 locomotives temporarily.[3] Electric loco Shed, Gomoh is now housing a large fleet of WAG-9 in Indian Railways and it caters to many long-distance freight electric trains.[4][5]

Like all locomotive sheds, GMO does regular maintenance, overhaul and repair including painting and washing of locomotives. It not only attends to locomotives housed at GMO but to ones coming in from other sheds as well. It has four pit lines for loco repair. Locomotives of Gomoh ELS along with Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya and Barauni ELS were the regular links for all trains running through Jharkhand and Bihar when widespread electrification of railway lines started in East Central Railways. GMO locomotives used to be predominantly the regular links for trains traveling to south as well. It handled prestigious trains like Sampoorna Kranti Express, Rajdhani Express, Archana Express and many more link express trains and superfast trains.

Livery and Markings[edit]

A former GMO based WAG-9 #31086 had a unique red coloured livery and G/9 fonted on the side of the locomotive with name of the locomotive written as Doctor Silver which is now transferred to Patratu.

GMO based locomotives have standardised livery all over India. GMO has its own stencils which is marked on loco's front and back body.
